Tucson Improv Movement: Tucson Comedy Arts Festival

🛎️Yes and News - 10/3/24

Our old theater had a garage door, and it was really cool, it also had a swamp cooler which wasn't cool. Our first Tucson Comedy Arts Festival was held in that location on November 4th-7th 2025, and it is wild to me that we are going to kick off our 10th festival next week. I have such stark memories from that first event. I remember people taking workshops and having lunch at B Line.  Having some teams down from Phoenix and playing to a packed house, the electric vibes of that last evening, and then going over to The Shanty for the final after-party. The energy of that first festival was something to behold.

I am hoping that we can recreate it as we go into this festival.  I am so excited to welcome Carla Cackowski and Jaime Moyer to town to perform with us and teach some amazing workshops. Diana Brown a Tucson native who travels all over the country teaching and performing will be teaching a workshop on improvised Shakespeare. And Jose Gonzalez and Marisol Chavez two of my favorite performers from Phoenix will be teaching a workshop.

We have some amazing performances scheduled some highlights include: several teams from San Francisco, Leland Long a former TIM Member who has been living and performing in New York City will be putting on a stand up show, and almost all of TIM Teams will be performing.  I can't wait for our Improv Matinee on Sunday, October 13th featuring our newest TIM Member teams and a very special edition of The Game Show Show. I don't think we have ever done an improv show on a Sunday, so we are still coming up on firsts 10 years in.

So please come out and support the festival!  Take a workshop, see a show, grab an All Access Pass! But overall just check out our festival website, and make sure you get out to something, you have 10 days and 24 different shows to choose from!  So support live and local comedy with a lot of out-of-town guests!

Alebrijes: or Ridiculous Beautiful Beasts

BY GEORGINA ESCOBAR

Originally commissioned by Milagro, in Portland, Oregon

RUNS OCT 17 - NOV 3, 2024

DIRECTED BY MARC DAVID PINATE

This partnership with Scoundrel and Scamp and Tucson Meet Yourself has been fun and you get to enjoy the end result!

When a young couple discover the largest Día de los Muertos altar they've ever seen, magic begins permeating their world. A little creature, known as an alebrije, sweeps into the room and takes the bride's imagination, merging past and present in this playful homage to Pedro Linares, the creator of the alebrije. Set in present-day San Luis Potosí, in Xochimilco in 1936, and in an afterlife that looks rather like a psychedelic Oaxacan jungle, young Pedro realizes his artistic potential and creates a cultural legacy. Alebrijes celebrates the beauty and absurdity of life, art, and love, and invites us to consider that death is not a severance, but an evolution.
