October 10th free public forum on forthcoming film production incentives program

From: Film Tucson <pcatalanotte@visittucson.org>
Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2022 5:47 PM
Subject: News from Film Tucson - August 2022

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Arizona's film communities, we now have statewide incentives taking effect in September 2023 which will give us a competitive edge in the production marketplace.

One year from now is the perfect amount of time for all of us to prepare for the upswing in production this new law will bring.

Here's are some of the strategies Film Tucson already has in the works.

Soundstages

  • We've been in preliminary discussions with a few companies interested in building soundstages in our region. Once these inquiries transition into concrete plans, Film Tucson will bring in the appropriate City, County, or State offices who can assist with potential workforce development grants, zoning information, and other relevant matters.

  • Film Tucson has been actively connecting potential investors with soundstage developers seeking partnerships.

  • We are in the process of creating a committee of stakeholders who can help explore the various options available to bring soundstage facilities to our region. Officials representing the City of Tucson, Pima County, Rio Nuevo, Pima Community College, and the University of Arizona, along with a few private entities, are slated to participate.

Crew

  • This October, Film Tucson and AZ Film & Digital Media will hold another series of classes (the previous ones took place in the pre-pandemic days) aimed at adding more talented workers to our crew base. Instructors will once again train students to become certified production assistants, grip/lighting personnel, and members of the art department. This program was so successful that some graduates of the previous classes were hired by HBO to be a part of Duster.

  • Film Tucson has also been discussing training plans with the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters for classes aimed specifically at set builders for film productions.

  • As we did prior to HBO's arrival back in 2021, our office will once again work with our local unions to find ways to streamline the process for Tucson crew to attain membership efficiently and cost-effectively.

City / County / State

  • Film Tucson will be working with City Attorneys to bring its film permits up to date with the technological needs of the motion picture industry.

  • We will be introducing representatives from the City of Tucson Economic Initiatives to local film-related businesses looking to expand before the incentives take effect in 2023. We are also in talks with Pima County to provide a similar collaboration through their Economic Development offices.

  • On Monday, October 10th from 4pm-6pm, Film Fest Tucson will be hosting a free public forum sponsored by Film Tucson and the AZ Film & Digital Media Coalition intended to gather public comments and questions regarding the forthcoming incentives program. The location of this event will be the AC Hotel by Marriott Tucson Downtown (151 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85701). Be on the lookout for more info about this forum closer to the event date.

Promotions

  • Film Tucson will be publicizing the new incentives program at various upcoming high-profile film industry events, including the American Film Market and SXSW, among others.

  • This past summer, we held a brainstorming session with representatives at the University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television on various ways to connect with former Tucsonans and UA graduates now working in Hollywood as a way to pitch information about the new incentives program directly to industry professionals.

  • We have future plans to create eye-catching digital and/or print advertising (with other state film offices) promoting the forthcoming film incentives program in prominent industry publications and websites.

BOSTON MARRIAGE

by David Mamet

Set at the turn of the century, Anna and Claire are two ladies in love.

For these scheming socialites, maintaining their class status is full-time work, and hilarity cleverly ensues as their plans unfold. Anna has become the mistress of a wealthy man and has already received an emerald. Meanwhile, Claire is infatuated with a respectable young woman and she

enlists Anna's help to arrange a secret meeting with her. When this plan goes awry, Anna and Claire's status and wealth are suddenly in jeopardy. Writers and theatre goers have long admired David Mamet's hilarious, expertly-written dialogue in this acclaimed jab at the patriarchy.

STONES IN HIS POCKETS

by Marie Jones

Hollywood comes to rural Ireland in this hilarious multi-award winner which ran for four years in London's West End. This offbeat, endearing tale in which two local Irishmen work as extras on a Hollywood film brilliantly mixes comedy with the poignancy of unexpected loss. Every artist with unrealized childhood dreams will invest in the successes and shortcomings of Charlie and Jake in this acclaimed production of Stones In His Pockets.

territories. On this fantastical journey they encounter cannibals, trolls, artifacts, and more as each of their destinies are revealed to them.

Geography of Yearning has captivated fantasy and science fiction lovers for over thirty years and its acclaim has only grown.

THE OTHER PLACE

by Sharr White

Juliana is a successful medical scientist whose life is unraveling. She is dealing with a divorce and disapproves that her daughter has eloped with an older man. While Juliana grasps to regain control, a mystery unfolds and facts begin to blend with fiction. As her distress reveals that things may not be what they seem, her focus on The Other Place (a cottage on Cape Cod) turns to obsession as Juliana believes this is where she might reunite with her missing daughter. Are phone calls

from her daughter a delusion? Is her obsession warranted? Juliana's

assuredness is put to the test as The Other Place's twists and turns

are sure to leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

LUNGS

by Duncan Macmillan

In this brutally honest, intimate production, a young couple debates

bringing a child into the world. Zooming in on the results of overpopulation and climate change, W and M's decision reaches

well beyond their relationship, and laughter is the antidote to

the stress around their big-picture questions. In Lungs, Duncan

Macmillan successfully puts his finger on the pulse of the cultural and

personal questions that are informing the life decisions of our young

community members, and he does so through empathetic, jarring,

and hilarious exchanges.

Note: This show contains explicit language.

WALTER CRONKITE IS DEAD

by Joe Calarco

In this endearing plea for common ground, Walter Cronkite Is Dead is

set in an airport amidst a flurry of delayed flights. Patty, a boisterous

Southerner, strikes up a conversation with Margaret, a liberal from

Washington. Over a bottle of wine, they argue about their personal

passions and emboldened opinions about what it means to live

in present-day America. When they begin to confide in each other

about details of their personal lives, their anger turns to empathy and

a friendship forms. This funny, frank, and unpredictable production

emphasizes all that could be possible if people from opposite sides of

the political aisle took the time to really listen to one another.

VENUS IN FUR

by David Ives

Thomas, a director in a bind, is desperate to find an actress to play the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Fur. Enter Vanda, a vulgar and equally desperate actress. Though, on the surface, she is utterly wrong for the part, she authoritatively and seductively masters the part. As they work through the script, a game

of domination and submission plays out with only enough room for one

of them to win. This mysterious, charmingly erotic and acclaimed work is a high point in David Ives' diverse body of work.

Note: This show contains explicit language and adult themes.

September 7 - October 7, 2023

HIR

by Taylor Mac

When a son returns home from Afghanistan ready to challenge his

abusive father, he finds an unexpected scenario: Isaac's father has suffered a debilitating stroke and his mother has gleefully taken

control of the household with unwavering support from little sister

Max, newly out as transgender. Isaac revels in the old, "be careful

what you wish for" mantra, as he struggles to find his place in this

new family dynamic. Celebrated as a dysfunctional family dramedy

for a new era, Taylor Mac's HIR turns patriarchy on its head with

intriguingly fresh results.

by Catherine Oda

Space Lady (Karate Expert, Alien, Hero) and Doctor V (Totally Real Doctor, Air Guitar Enthusiast,

That is, however, until the Masquerader, a new ruthless villain, tries to destroy the city that Space Lady and Doctor V have been fighting over! The sacred bond between hero and villain will be stressed as things start to get real. What will happen?

TOOTH FAIRIES IN TRAINING

by Richard Gremel

It is the first day of tooth fairy training for Bridget Bicuspid and Marty Molar. But things aren't

going as well as they wanted. As hard as they try, they just don't have what it takes to become

official tooth fairies. When Calvin McCavity threatens to end the Fairy Flight Force once and for

all, it is up to Bridget and Marty to save the day before it's "tooth" late.

YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS OF TUCSON

LTW's 4th annual Young Playwrights of Tucson Competition encourages students from all over our

community to write and submit their short stories for a chance to be workshopped in the summer. Each

top young playwright is teamed up with one of LTW's seasoned playwrights/directors to help get their plays from the scripts to the stage. Local talented students audition, perform, and run the tech for all of the shows. This is a great way to see Tucson youth blow you away with how much talent they have. With the help of LTW's Children's Theatre leaders, these students take the stage and give a voice to the stories they want everyone to hear.

Improv With The Best!

This week - Alrinthea Carter!

Exclusively on our
Unscrewed Theater Facebook page!

This week marks our 72nd episode of Ten Minutes with Dawn. What started as a way to improvise, connect, and laugh during a pandemic that kept us indoors craving human interaction has led to two wildly successful seasons with Dawn and improvisors from all over the world.

And on this extremely high and bittersweet note, we're calling these delightful episodes to a close. As is only fitting, we'll end as we started it. With the one and only Alrinthea Carter!

Emmy Award nominee Alrinthea Carter is a South Carolina girl who was raised in Germany as part of a military family. After graduating from Winthrop University, Alrinthea moved to South Korea for a year, becoming a preschool teacher for Air Force children in Osan.

After learning more kids' songs than she ever expected, Alrinthea moved back to South Carolina to attend graduate school at Clemson University, which set the stage for a career advising Clemson students for 16 years.

Her tenure at Clemson ended when she was staffed as a writer on the Emmy-winning Comedy Variety series "A Black Lady Sketch Show" on HBO, created by comedy giant Robin Thede. Alrinthea was nominated for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series" alongside the ABLSS writing staff.

An improviser for nine years, Alrinthea has performed across the country and is a highly sought-after improv instructor and coach.

Alrinthea is also a photographer with an artistic focus on the abandoned spaces of the American South. She was recently noted in The Hollywood Reporter and widely published and featured in Art Galleries. She gave a TED Talk focusing on the connection between her abandoned space photography and living with depression.

She is always searching for new ways to implement glitter into her daily life while waiting for a call back confirming her selection as a Solid Gold Dancer, which should be any day now.

We know you'll miss this great way to start your weekend. But not to worry - The archive will remain right here. Bookmark it to come back again and again and again.
