Ever wanted to take a class that was nothing but games? Well now you can! During this class students will be exploring the art of improv. Learn how to think on your feet, increase stage presence and reaction, and also the importance of teamwork on stage. Improv is a valuable tool for actors to practice their skills and it's fun too! We will have a showcase on the last day of class.

The 39 Steps 

Adapted by Patrick Barlow 

From the novel by John Buchan 

From the movie of Alfred Hitchcock 

And an original concept by Simon Corble & Nobby Dimon 

Directed by Gene Abravaya 

 

This fast-paced comic spoof based on the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, follows the misadventures of Richard Hannay, a staid and unassuming man, who finds himself framed for murder and dragged into a web of spies. Possessing information vital to England's safety, he (clumsily) evades the police and murderous thugs, on a journey that takes him from London, through the Scottish moors, and back again, finding love along the way.  

 

Seeking: 4 to 6 versatile actors of various ages to perform the 100+ roles in the script. Must be in excellent shape as the pace of the play is rapid-fire and physically demanding (climbing ladders and quickly descending, leaping from risers, pratfalls, stage fighting, tumbling). 

 

Please prepare a 2-to-3-minute monologue – preferably comic. Be prepared to perform portions of your monologue again incorporating the sometimes-outlandish adjustments asked by the director. Where comfortable clothes and shoes.

We are excited for volunteers to join us on all eight (8) nights of performances. This will be our largest volunteer event yet!

 

We are looking to fill nineteen (19) volunteer shifts each night Thursdays-Sundays on both weekends. That's 152 shifts to fill! We could not do this without you!

On Friday, April 14th, from 7:00-8:00pm, a 1-hour volunteer info session will be held on Zoom. Volunteers and those interested can stop by anytime with questions.

 

All Volunteers should CHECK IN with volunteer coordinator Katharine Len Yee Mitchell - there will be a volunteer table next to the entrance to the event. Please arrive 15 minutes before your shift start time so that you can orient yourself with the space and event offerings.

We are super excited to have an out-of-town guest for the Soapbox this weekend. Sara Villagio is the Chief Marketing Officer at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  This is a show not to be missed, so get a taste of the big apple here in downtown Tucson Friday night!

Sara Villagio hails from Queens, NY and is in Tucson visiting her sister Amy, a member of the Tucson improv scene! Sara Is the Chief Marketing Officer at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and leads all marketing and brand strategy, creative and graphic design, ticket sales, web content and social media engagement, and customer service for Carnegie Hall's three iconic stages, including hundreds of performances each year as well as the Hall's global education and social impact programs. She loves nearly everything about life in NYC, and is looking forward to seeing how working in the music business, dating, and the general shenanigans of NYC life fit into the show. In her free time, you can find Sara swinging kettlebells, trying new cuisines in her Jackson Heights neighborhood, or taking in live music all over NYC.

Some of the dances are loosely based on “Through the looking Glass “ theme. Umbrellas fly, fabrics soar over the audience, balloons swallow people, and snow swirls on the Centennial Hall stage this spring. With stunning images and gales of laughter, Air Play bounces on the edge of definition: part comedy, part sculpture, part circus, part theater.

A circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air, Air Play transforms ordinary objects into uncommon beauty.  Created by circus performers Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone in collaboration with kinetic sculptor Daniel Wurtzel, this performance was devised through years of experimentation with simple materials, movement, and technology. 

Join us for a visual poem great for all ages that uses no words to bring to life the very air we breathe. No translation necessary, this experience has played from the southernmost opera house in the world in Chile to London’s Royal Festival Hall, Melbourne’s State Theatre, and Shanghai’s Grand Theatre, and continues to tour.

One Twig at a Time

Found object puppetry, poetic visual theater, humor, pathos, drought, flood, over-abundance and the vacuum of space are explored in an inspiring and heartfelt new ensemble work by visual storyteller Wolfe Bowart (OAF, Cloud Soup, Letter's End). Wolfe returns to the S&S stage with the Tati and Jeunet inspired One Twig at a Time. An ensemble of five multigenerational actors, including Bowart, will explore community via a series of visual poems drawn from notebooks the theater-maker has filled over the years with abstract sketches, dreams and theatrical images.

Live Theatre Workshop's 2023-2024 Season

 

Live Theatre Workshop is hosting an open call casting audition for all performing programs from noon - 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2023.

LTW produces theatre and theatre education in Tucson that entertains, educates, and enlightens children, adults, and families, and we are looking for musical theatre, dramatic, and comedic actors excited to show off their acting talents. LTW casts roles for its professional Children’s Theatre musicals, Mainstage shows, and Etcetera Late Night shows throughout the year. LTW is a Safe Place and ally who encourages people of all ethnicities, abilities, ages, and who identify as any gender to audition.

 

All roles are paid a set stipend based on the size of the role and time commitment.

People auditioning should email a headshot and resume to Karin Hupp at karin.h@livetheatreworkshop.org and will be assigned a time to arrive for their audition. Some roles for the 2023 - 2024 seasons have already been cast. A list of shows will be posted to our website soon when the rights are secured.

Auditions will take place in person at 3322 E. Fort Lowell Road. If you are unable to attend in person, we can schedule a Zoom audition during the audition date and time. In person auditions are encouraged.

 

Please prepare a one-minute monologue. Those interested in auditioning for Children’s Theatre musicals can also prepare a 32-bar musical selection to pre-recorded music. Please send an MP3 File ahead of your audition. A Cappella songs are not recommended.

Live Theatre Workshop also seeks qualified costumers, stage managers, sound designers, carpenters, set designers, and sound designers. Those interested in technical roles should submit a resume and cover letter to Holli Diffin at holli.d@livetheatreworkshop.org.

Last month Tootpole: a Musical Comedy Extravaganza premiered as the openers for the Game Show Show, and they was amazing!  The house was sold out, the songs were fun, the improv was hilarious, and it was an extravaganza of funny!  So I recommend you come out this month for one of the most fun nights of comedy that we have at the theater.

This week is the final opening round of Improv Madness.  We have the last slate of teams trying to make it to the Championship round next Saturday when we will crown our champion.  Make sure you get out to vote for your favorite duo so they can continue into the madness!
