Smashing all preconceived ideas of what a musical can be, Next to Normal burst onto the scene in 2009, winning 3 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for its heartbreaking, humorous and unflinchingly authentic look at how one suburban household copes with crisis. The Goodmans, in fact, seem like a perfect family. Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American household. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother, Diana, has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love and compassion.
