Have you ever found yourself slipping into the role of imposter? Have you been duped by a pretender, a conniver, a phony? Did life compel you to orchestrate a ruse, engage in subterfuge, run a con? We’ve all had to alter our personalities to fit in, get by, or measure up but what happens if the deceit goes too far or is used against you?

December’s theme is Imposter, so plunge into the bamboozlement with us, and bring your own story for our spontaneous storytelling mid-show!

Storytellers include:

Tiara Bertram is, much like the Starburst candy, one contradiction eating another. A desert transplant who hates hiking, Tiara has been in Tucson for a nonconsecutive six years. This is her first performance with Odyssey; normally her borderline-narcissistic anecdotes can be seen on the stage of Female* StoryTellers, where Tiara serves on the board of directors and, to everyone’s misfortune, runs the Twitter account. In her limited free time, she does house-sitting and pet-sitting gigs, mostly to microdose having her own fur babies.

Adam Maltby (he/him) allegedly grew up in rural New York state and has never had a nickname that stuck. In no particular order, he at various times considered becoming an actor, a chameleonic, a doomed rock star, a travel writer, and Indiana Jones, but settled on being a social worker. (You can’t win ‘em all). He’s the kind of person who starts planning his Halloween costume in mid-summer but still can’t keep a houseplant alive. (The cat appears to be doing OK, though, but he’s a cat. It’s hard to say.) Adam is prone to doing ill-advised things because he thinks they’d make a good story someday, but you’d be a better judge of that.

Molly McCloy is a four-time Moth StorySLAM winner whose story “Grudge #7” was recently chosen as a “Best of” story on the Risk! podcast. Mary Jo Pollack lives life out loud, not only as a storyteller, but as a general life philosophy. She has appeared at Odyssey Storytelling, Female* StoryTellers, Tellers of Tales Tucson, GRIT, a digital show for the 2022 Toronto Storytelling Festival, and a variety of virtual platforms. She won The Moth StorySLAM in Phoenix in July 2020. Mary Jo transplanted to Tucson in July 2014 via California, via Minnesota. Artists never completely retire, but she withdrew from the nine-to-five grind over a decade ago. She’s also an author, with a book in search of a publisher.

Lisa Stafford has made a career of teaching through storytelling. She has shared stories on The Moth stages in both Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as with the Waupaca Story Project, also in Wisconsin. Together with her good friend Jan Kuder, Lisa has led workshops to help people put words to their stories. She loves to encourage people to share their stories.

A self-described word nerd, Jan Stapleman (Curator) provides editing and training on writing skills through her business, Fearless Communications. When she’s not being obsessive about grammar and punctuation, she’s an avid storyteller, hiker, and camper. She’s told stories at Denver’s Moth StorySLAMs and on the Odyssey stage. The Moth aired one of her stories on its podcast in November 2021.
