SASO Presents StarStruck Gala Jan. 28 in SaddleBrooke

TUCSON, AZ – The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra will present the sixth annual StarStruck gala on Saturday, Jan. 28 featuring dinner, silent and live auctions and music by Tucson Junior Strings Chamber 1 Orchestra.

This fundraiser for this all-volunteer orchestra will be held at the Mountain View Country Club in SaddleBrooke. Southwestern historian, author and raconteur Jim Turner will be master of ceremonies and Marc Weisel the auctioneer.

This annual gala helps raise funds to ensure that SASO can continue to bring new works and outstanding guest artists to Tucson and surrounding communities. Under the baton of Music Director Linus Lerner, this local community orchestra toured China two years ago, presenting six performances in five cities, including Beijing.

The event begins with a no-host bar and silent auction at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m., then the live auction and entertainment. One auction item that draws intense bidding is the opportunity to conduct the orchestra in concert. Other items include jewelry, a Pinetop cabin retreat, dining certificates, wine and collectibles. The cost is $90 per person. Purchase tickets at www.sasomusic.org or call 308-6226.

Tucson Junior Strings is an orchestral training program for young string players directed by Dennis R. Bourret since 1970. There are six progressive levels of chamber orchestras. The Chamber 1 orchestra of violins, violas, cellos and basses is the top-tier ensemble and performs without a conductor. This group presents a range of music from baroque to contemporary and goes on a week-long tour each spring.

Bourret has been principal violinist and violist of the Tucson Symphony, Arizona Opera, and Tucson Pops Orchestra and a guest conductor of SASO. He was a founding member of the Cremona Collage piano quartet, which traveled to Brazil in 1995. Currently he is affiliated with Ensemble Gaudeamus, which initiated the Big Horns Chamber Music Festival in Sheridan, Wyoming in 2000.

Founded in 1979, SASO has grown into a vital community resource that unites performers and audiences through a mutual love of music. The orchestra presents a wide range of compositions including world premiers, seldom-performed treasures and classical favorites. SASO brings together talented student, amateur and professional musicians with exceptional soloists, composers and conductors. SASO presents five pairs of concerts each season in Tucson and in SaddleBrooke.

The StarStruck gala will be held at 38759 S. Mountain View Blvd. in SaddleBrooke, north of the town of Catalina. For directions, visit www.sasomusic.org.
