Doubt, a parable

By John Patrick Shanley

Directed by Amy Almquist

Set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, DOUBT traces the bitter confrontation between Father Flynn, a charismatic young priest, and Sister Aloysius, the tradition-minded principal of the school. Suspicions arise over the relationship between Flynn and a student.  Armed with nothing more than a resolute belief in her suspicions and a few circumstantial details, Sister Aloysius instigates a campaign to remove the priest.  But this is only the beginning, for around every corner of this complex play, playwright Shanley is waiting to spring a surprise. Some of Tucson's best-known stage actors carry this modern masterpiece about faith and uncertainty to a new level by performing it in the sanctuary of a church. DOUBT, alternately absorbing, humorous and troubling, will stay with you long after the final curtain.

“Blunt yet subtle, manipulative but full of empathy for all sides, the play is set in 1964 but could not be more timely. In just ninety fast-moving minutes, Shanley creates four blazingly individual people. DOUBT is a lean, potent drama…passionate, exquisite, important, and engrossing.” - New York Newsday.
