In 1943 Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family are forced into hiding toescape deportation to concentration camps by the Nazis. Living secretly in a cramped annex, in constant fear of being discovered and isolated from the outside world, days fluctuated between boredom, hunger, deprivation and terror. During the two years in hiding, young Anne Frank recorded her thoughts and feelings in her now world-famous diary. The play, adapted from Anne’s diary, made its theater debut in October 1955 and was an immediate critical and popular success. It won the Pulitzer Prize, the Critics Circle Prize and the Tony Award for best play in 1956. Anne Frank became a universal symbol of triumph of spirit over oppression. The play released a wave of emotion that finally broke through the silence with which the Germans had treated the Nazi period. Pima’s performances commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day 2013.
