Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Center for the Arts announces its 2012-2013 Season: Applaud! an eclectic and dynamic selection of performances, gallery exhibits and special events. Pima’s theatre arts performances take the audience from family jungle adventures to edge-of-your-seat suspense, rollicking 50s rock ‘n roll romance to a young girl’s hopeful inspiration. While Pima’s dance shows explore the wonders of the world and a fusion of dance styles. Student, faculty and guest artist performances by Pima’s music program provide classical entertainment. Exhibitions of contemporary works by international, national and regional visual artists in the Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery continue to wow the community. The season rounds out with an award-winning digital video and film screening; a runway fashion show of student-designed apparel; and readings and workshops by Pima’s communication department. The Center for the Arts complex, situated on PCC’s West Campus, consists of the Proscenium Theatre, the Black Box Theatre, theRecital Hall and the Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery.

 

PCC Theatre Arts

THE JUNGLE BOOK, adapted by Joseph Robinette, based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Directed by Mickey Nugent. September 26 - October 7, 2012, in the Proscenium Theatre (Fri. and Sat. at 7 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: October 5. Tickets are $6. An energetic and humorous family adventure featuring a young Rudyard Kipling sent from his home in Bombay to a British boarding school. His new classmates tease him for being different, but his teachers are kind and encourage him to write. Kipling’s story of Mowgli, the Indian boy raised by caring wolves in the jungles of India with Bagheera, the panther, Baloo, the bear and the menacing tiger Shere Kahn, parallels the boarding school’s residents. Along the way both young Rudyard and Mowgli learn lessons of strength and understanding. Jungle Jamboree, a free event for kids and their parents, is Saturday, September 22 at 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre. (School matinee performances are also available for elementary and middle school groups 9/26 through 10/5.)

 

WAIT UNTIL DARK, by Frederick Knott. Directed by Dr. Frank Pickard. November 8-18, 2012, in the Black Box Theatre (Thu.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m.; Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: November 15. Tickets are $15 with discounts available. This taut, intense thriller swiftly moves from one moment of suspense to another building the tension up to almost unbearable levels toward a terrifying, breath-stopping final scene. A blind Greenwich Village woman becomes the target of three con men searching for heroin hidden in a doll given to her by her husband. When thelights go out, the game of survival begins!

 

ALL SHOOK UP, inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, book by Joe Dipietro. Brought to the stage by the creative team of Todd Poelstra, Mickey Nugent, Nancy Davis Booth and Dr. Mark Nelson. February 21-March 3, 2013, in the Proscenium Theatre (Wed.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters: February 27. Tickets are $18 with discounts available. Anexuberant jukebox Broadway musical with high-energy dance numbers kick starts a chain reaction of romances and rebellion through the power of rock ‘n roll music. This is Footloose, Grease and Happy Days all rolled into one with more than 24 Elvis hits including Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, One Night With You, Don’t Be Cruel, A Little Less Conversation and Burning Love. Opening night, Thursday, February21 features a 50’s Rock ‘n Roll Celebration with prizes for best attire and refreshments.

 

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Directed by Nancy Davis Booth. April 11–21, 2013, in the Black Box Theatre (Thu.-Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2 p.m.). ASL interpreters: April 18. Tickets are $15 with discounts available. In 1943 Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family are forced into hiding toescape deportation to concentration camps by the Nazis. Living secretly in a cramped annex, in constant fear of being discovered and isolated from the outside world, days fluctuated between boredom, hunger, deprivation and terror. During the two years in hiding, young Anne Frank recorded her thoughts and feelings in her now world-famous diary. The play, adapted from Anne’s diary, made its theater debut in October 1955 and was an immediate critical and popular success. It won the Pulitzer Prize, the Critics Circle Prize and the Tony Award for best play in 1956. Anne Frank became a universal symbol of triumph of spirit over oppression. The play released a wave of emotion that finally broke through the silence with which the Germans had treated the Nazi period. Pima’s performances commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day 2013.

Chorale & College Singers Concerts – Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Ng featuring selections for a large mixed-voice choir and a more select mixed-voice a cappella choir. October 21, 2012 and December 2, 2012, at 3 p.m.; March 5, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.; May 5, 2012, at 3 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre.

Jazz Improv Combos Concerts – Under the direction of Mike Kuhn featuring individual combos performing their own set of repertoire with music from early swing numbers through bebop, modern fusion and funk styles. November 19, 2012 and April 22, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre.

 

Jazz Ensemble Concerts – Under the direction of Mike Kuhn featuring jazz standards performed from a variety of periods in big band style. November 27, 2012 and April 30, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre.

 

OrchestraConcerts - Under the direction of Dr. Alexander Tentser featuring a repertoire for orchestra with high school/college students and community adults. December 1, 2012 and May 12, 2013, at 3 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre.

 

Musical Theatre Workshop – Under the direction of Nancy Davis Booth featuring the integration of singing, acting and movement in scenes from popular musicals. December 5, 2012 and May 1, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

WONDERS OF THE WORLD. Under the direction of Aurora Gonçalves-Shaner, dancers explore the world's most spectacular natural wonders and manmade structures and the cultural aspects of the region. Ballet, modern and jazz dances, choreographed to wide array of music along with enormous projections and colorful costumes highlight this globe trotting journey. December 7-8, 2012, Fri. at 7:30 p.m., Sat. at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre. (A school matinee performance is available for elementary and middle school groups 12/7.)

 

DANCE FUSION II. Under the direction of Aurora Gonçalves-Shaner, a performance melding various dance styles together in a melting pot of dance movements from classical to contemporary styles; intermingling ballet, modern, jazz and more! A vibrant blend of physicality, musicality and passion is demonstrated with innovative choreography and contrasting music.
