Hello TFTV Friends,

Even in the midst of this pandemic, these are positive times for the School of Theatre, Film & Television, with much change and growth happening now and in the near future. We can't pack it all into this first newsletter, so stay tuned for coming news about a major renovation to the Marroney Theatre (soon to be the Marroney Center), some emerging national and international partnerships, and new programs and initiatives throughout the school.

We are incredibly excited about this weekend's first online version of I Dream in Widescreen. In many ways, this IDIWS pivot to a virtual format offers a perfect entrée into other changes we are making to our training and production programs. Today's proliferation of media formats requires us to offer our performers, filmmakers, designers, stage managers, producers and scholars larger imaginations for how their careers might take shape in these exciting new times. We will keep you up to date as we grow and change.

We are also working to engage with experts in changing TFTV's infrastructure and programs in ways that we hope can provide some immediate, and perhaps more importantly, some durable changes that will make TFTV a naturally inclusive and equitable and diverse environment where all can find their voice and tell their stories. We have work to do. It's going to take some time, but we are committed to taking that time to listen and change. We hope you will join us on our journey of open-hearted reflection and change.

The 15th annual I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN takes place this weekend, and the event has gone digital! Join us on YouTube from the comfort of home starting Saturday August 8 at 3pm PT/6pm ET as we premiere thesis films created by the talented and resourceful Class of 2020. Alumnus and Netflix Head of Original Film Scott Stuber will kick off proceedings.

Bonus: this reinvented and expanded edition of I Dream in Widescreen features conversations with an incredible array of film and television industry luminaries – all alumni of the University of Arizona.

Reimagining A.R.T.

As many of you know, we will not be presenting public performances this Fall. During this transitionary period, we are excited to announce a new program in the works. ART in Conversation will feature virtual discussions and Q&As with star alumni and notable guests from the theatre world. A unique opportunity for ART company members, TFTV students and audience members to meet and interact with artists and professionals at the top of their field. Keep an eye on your in-box for further details and dates!

Magic Hour 2020

Filmmaker Pablo Perez (BFA Film & Television), pictured, reflects on the 2020 edition of Magic Hour: "This year has been tasking on so many levels. A decent analogy would be a rollercoaster ride where the view of finishing our final projects was the ride coming to an end, only to go for an unexpected second run with the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, I have learned that I am too persistent to let a crisis stop me. I am a filmmaker. One of the rites of passage for a filmmaker is to expect the unexpected and to act accordingly."

Filmmaker Roxanna Denise Stevens Ibarra ('20) earned a glowing review for her film Tesoro, premiering this weekend at I Dream in Widescreen. Congratulations to film editor Lindsay Utz ('03) for her 2020 Emmy Nomination in the category of Outstanding Picture Editing for A Nonfiction Program for her work on the documentary American Factory.
