It's Been a Heck of a Year!

Beginning in March and throughout 2020, Sol Axe was on hiatus as a performing and rehearsing group. However, we maintained our connections within our Tucson community by having online meet ups together, along with a few socially distanced, masked, outdoor rehearsals. As the year ended and the numbers for COVID19 rose, we agreed to return to hiatus and monitor community directives.

All during the pandemic, our master teachers, an incredible treasure trove of music and dance knowledge, found themselves grounded and needing to find new ways to continue their art and survive with new livelihood. Most of our master teachers have continued to teach and perform online. We've shared links throughout the pandemic, but we will be compiling a list of teachers, links, and resources through our friends at California Brazil Camp (canceled this year for the first time in 19 years!). These resources will be teachers that someone from Sol Axe has studied with at camp, or in Brazil, or here in Tucson, and throughout the pandemic online. As we move into our new normal, anyone will be able to keep up with available teachers of their choice.

Please consider supporting your teachers! The arts, musicians, and the samba communities of Brazil and the Diaspora have been hit especially hard with crippling pandemic numbers, and cancellation of Carnaval celebrations that are the livelihood of so many communities.

Silvestre Technique Family fundraising for a permanent home

The Silvestre Technique family is celebrating the opportunity to grow within a permanent space in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

The location of the space will be right by the Praça da Sé, which is close to the famous Elevator/Elevador that connects the higher and lower sides of the city, and very close to the Escola de Dança (FUNCEB), where the Silvestre Intensive Training has been held for more than two decades. The space will be an open house for the Silvestre Technique family from all over the world.

This will be a permanent home for the Silvestre training community, which will be able to host ongoing classes and training for not only the international students like ourselves but the local youth and children of various backgrounds, with focus on the socially disadvantaged groups.

For the past 28 years, Silvestre Intensives and ongoing classes in Salvador, as well as trainings everywhere in the world have been a great vehicle of cultural exchange, and have brought many benefits to Brazilian and international students alike. The vision of creating the Silvestre Family home is to amplify these positive cycles of discovery, learning and human connection in a dedicated space.

TODAY, Ana with the
International Samba Congress will hold a Facebook live to talk about the upcoming workshop aimed at the Tucson community, organized by two of Rosangela's students inspired by the story. They will be joined by other long time students of Rosangela's, sharing their experiences. You can join the Live for information, or be sure to join the workshop on January 16th

Remembering and Resources

In 2020, we didn't have a year full of events as we typically do. However, we feel fortunate that we were able to bring back Extra Ancestral, and our consulting directors at large, Kahlil Cummings and Rachel Hernandez, in February. We had an amazing couple of days of Afro Brazilian drumming as well as Orixa inspired dance with samba reggae.

We'd like to invite you to visit our website as we create photo albums of past events and residencies. Please check back often as we update our site in support of our teachers and their communities. We will also send out a newsletter reminder when these projects are complete.

In the meantime, please check out two of our favorite resources for all things African Diaspora inspired and all things Brazilian:

Extra Ancestral - We all know and have loved having Kahlil Cummings and Rachel Hernandez here in Tucson, and we were so grateful to have the entire ensemble here in Tucson for Tucson Meet Yourself in 2019. Kahlil and Rachel and an entire group of outstanding teachers of West African, Cuban, and Brazilian inspired drum and dance offer classes each month. Please visit HERE to get on the platform!

Out of many years hosting Brazilian music, movement, and culture - long time attendees of California Brazil Camp Courtney and Dianna created the podcast, The Brazilian Beat. This is easily one of the best podcasts for those interested in the music and dance of the Brazilian samba schools and more, as they have episode interviews from some of the most well known samba schools. They also have MANY resources for those interested in following and supporting musicians and their communities in Brazil. Check them out! The Brazilian Beat
