Tucson, Arizona--
Pima Community College Theatre Arts presents The Time of Your Life, William Saroyan’s tribute to depression-era Americana, under the direction of Dr. Frank Pickard. The play won the 1940 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the 1940 New York Drama Critics Circle Award.

The Time of Your Life takes place in 1939 pre World War II in a run-down dive bar in San Francisco—Nick’s Pacific Street Saloon, Restaurant and Entertainment Palace. An interesting and complex array of colorful characters frequent the bar, bemoaning their own stories and problems creating a sideshow within a show. Much of the action rotates around the ringleader Joe, a young loafer with money who encourages each of the bar’s patrons in their eccentricities. Director Pickard states, “This is a wonderful play for an ensemble cast. It touches on different classes and social standings of the time, yet the language is fresh and relevant for contemporary audiences.”

The play runs November 3-14 in the Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre. The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu
<mailto:centerforthearts@pima.edu> .

A photo call for the media is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19 at 6 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre. Director Frank Pickard is available for interviews by calling 520-206-6720 or e-mailing
fpickard@pima.edu.

Tucson: Carnival of Illusion, a fun Vaudeville-inspired magical theater show

Subject: Press Release: "Dinner and a Movie" Gets a Facelift!

Dinner and A movie” GETS A FACELIFT!

National award winning entertainers Sarlot & Eyed offer a unique DATE NIGHT alternative.

Tucson, Ariz. – September 29, 2010.  Date nights certainly aren’t what they used to be!

Local arts and culture fans and sweethearts have been flocking to Carnival of Illusion, a fun Vaudeville-inspired magical theater show presented by nationally award winning illusionists Roland Sarlot and Susan Eyed. Last season 62 out of 74 shows sold out. This season all shows to date have sold out and it looks like they’ve hit upon a fun, new date night experience.

“We’re very excited to have so many celebrations and couples at our show. We feel honored that our guests want to share their special evenings with us,” said Roland Sarlot after one show celebrating a first date, a 45th anniversary,  and three birthdays.

And they’re not just Tucsonans.  “We were surprised to have so many Phoenicians making it a romantic weekend away. Oooh la la!” said Susan Eyed after shaking hands with a Glendale couple after a performance. In that show alone, there were eight guests from the Phoenix area.

In Carnival of Illusion, guests are transported back in time when magic flourished as an art and was practiced in the salons and “parlours” of the wealthy. Roland Sarlot and Susan Eyed, a couple themselves, combine magic and mystery, humor and secrets to an exclusive audience of only 35 guests. Now playing at the Doubletree Hotel Tucson at Reid Park through the end of the year, tickets start at $24 and show guests receive a two for one dinner bonus from the Doubletree restaurants valued up to $40. In addition, the hotel offers room packages with special rates for the budget minded traveler.

“Amazing!” -LA Weekly

“Outstanding!” -Fox News Albuquerque

“Incredible!” -Indianapolis Star

“Extraordinary” -Tucson Weekly

“High-Caliber Conjuring” -Zocálo

“Phenomenal!” –Morning Blend, KGUN

Sarlot left a career in astronomical research to return to his first love: performing magic.  Eyed received a degree in International Studies, performed, studied and taught Middle Eastern dance and traveled the world. In 2002, they teamed up to create Dance of Illusion, a stage illusion show combining the ancient arts of magic and dance and based on their international travels. Susan became one of the few female magicians in the world. In 2009 Sarlot and Eyed created Carnival of Illusion.

Roland Sarlot and Susan Eyed, 2009 National Recipients for “Excellence in Magic”, were granted “Featured Performer” status during their 21 show run at Hollywood’s World Famous Magic Castle. They have performed as house entertainers at the world’s top resorts including Canyon Ranch and Miraval.

Carnival of Illusion plays now through December 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel Tucson at Reid Park, 445 S. Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ. Show times are every Friday and Saturday at 6:00pm and 8:30pm. Great for ages 8 to 108. Tickets available at www.carnivalofillusion.com or (520) 615-5299.

Miguel de Cervantes, along with his manservant, is thrown into prison by the Spanish Inquisition for foreclosing on a church that failed to pay taxes. There the prisoners steal his possessions, but he convinces them to allow him to win back a package of papers that would not be of value to other people. Pleading his case, Cervantes gives a dramatic defense by reenacting the story of Don Quixote of La Mancha: the passionate and poignant tale of a noble knight who lives in a world of madness and can not see that chivalry has died. His holy quest is a mission of salvation to find compassion not for himself but for others. Don Quixote falls in love with the fair maiden, Aldonza (Dulcinea), and convinces her to live a moral life. When Quixote is being knighted, the muleteers brutally assault Aldonza. Quixote and Sancho quickly run to Aldonza’s rescue but in the end, Quixote only preaches forgiveness. Next, Quixote fights off his darkest foe, the Enchanter. Moved by the story, the prisoners return Cervantes’ manuscript (which turns out to be his unfinished novel about Don Quixote) just before he is called before the Inquisition. The musical features several memorable songs, but “The Impossible Dream” has become a favorite classic.

Our Chapter won most improved for two years straight and improving from contest scores in the 50's to contest scores in the 70's. We have an Emmy winning director and the District Senior Quartet winners on our staff. As a Chapter of the BHS, we have access to personnel and other highly qualified clinicians who are ready willing and able to work directly with students through our Youth in Harmony Program; one of our prime charities. We are experienced in organizing, operating, and running the Tucson Youth in Harmony festival; 2010 was our fifth year. We are a 501(c)(3).

In addition to out-reach and musical education for the youth of Tucson we have a history of gratis performances for hospitals, shut-ins, Civic, and Charitable Foundations. In 2009 we were selected to be part of the Tucson Public Library Educational Presenters Program for 2010 and we will be giving presentations as part of the Library Education Program. We are allied with all of the teachers of music in Tucson and work with music educators across Arizona. We perform 4 or 5 full scale professional quality shows in public appearance each year and send VLQ's throughout the community in support of public education.

This year our Chorus Members Volunteered 100's of hours in support of Tucson Charities and 10 of our members worked the phones at pledge night for Public TV. We completed successfully in National Anthem Competition at the University of Arizona as a Chorus and will be singing at some U of A games in the 2010/2011 Season. We are winners of the Fox Foundation Grant; and, this year we were also winners of grants from the Association of International Contestants (Barbershop Harmony) and the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Our commitments to the Tucson Community and its school system are well known and have received National Attention. The cost of these programs has been offset in small portion by the above mentioned grants; but, the Chorus is in need of new Uniforms, Risers, a Riser Transportation/Storage Trailer, and money to off-set the cost of music and professional educator travel expenses for our educational efforts. At present our members donate much of their time and resources to keeping our programs healthy but over the long run this is not sustainable and is a hardship to many of the Chorus members who are retired and on fixed income.

If you are able to become a Patron of the Tucson Sunshine Chorus and participate in our educational and charitable activities it would be a great help to future generations of singers, music educators, and a grateful community that benefits from our efforts. Thank you for your time and consideration; and, please help us if you can.

The Guest Retainer opens October 15

Harry and Tom own the Hotel Jerskeet, in the middle of a New Jersey summer. At present, their only borders are mosquitoes, sand and a few "old fossils."  Harry and Tom hatch a plan to liven up the place and attract more guests.  They plan to hire a "Guest Retainer" to flatter and flirt with the women guests and, hopefully, light a fire under the "old fossils" and start up some interest in the place.  Well, their plan work better then they could have ever dreamed.  Soon, the "guest retainer" has his hands full and the hotel is jumping with business.  Now the only question that remains is will the hotel survive the guest retainer or will the guest retainer survive the guests.

The Guest Retainer was written by Carl Webster Pierce

Featured performers in The Guest Retainer  include Alex Greengaarde, Tony Ekstat, John McRostie, Joan O'Dwyer, Tina Swope, Jamie Mellon and Paul Hammack.

The Guest Retainer  plays Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 from October 15 through November 27.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available.  The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Ave. at the corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  Call 260-6442 for reservations.

The Dover Road runs through October 9

A. A. Milne's charming The Dover Road will run until October 9.  Milne, the author of Winnie-the-Pooh, was regarded as England's foremost playwright in the early part of the 20th century.  The success of his plays crossed the ocean and more than a dozen were produced on Broadway.

A couple plans a romantic escape to France.  On their way, their car breaks down on the Dover road.  They are forced to take refuge in a remote house owned by the mysterious Mr. Latimer.  Over the course of a late supper, Mr. Latimer reveals that the breakdown may not have been as accidental as the couple thought.  The couple soon learns that there is another couple staying in the house.  During the next few days, Mr. Latimer teaches the four "strangers" about love and life.

The Dover Road has been enthusiastically received by audiences at The Comedy Playhouse.  Also, the cast enjoys staging and performing the play.  So, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we mount another Milne production in 2011.

The Dover Road plays Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday at 3:00 Through October 9..  Seats are filling fast, so make your reservations now.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.  Call 260-6442 for reservations.
