                        Caribbean Folk Dance Workshops with Sonny Salina

                                                                                   

Join Barbea Williams Performing Company in two workshops with Dancer, Choreographer, Costume Designer and Master Folklorist Sonny Salina a native of Trinidad and Tobago.  A virtuoso in Traditional Caribbean Folk Art, Sonny has been acclaimed as the leading “ Limbo Dancer” of the World.  Currently, Sonny resides in New York City where he is the dance director with Something Positive, Inc. As a dancer & choreographer with the Julia Edwards Dance Company and the Malick Folk Performing Company in Trinidad and Tobago, Sonny has traveled extensively to the Americas, Japan, Europe, and within the Caribbean.  He performed and choreographed works for the Cyril St Lewis’s Humming Bird Dance Theatre, the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition with the Ministry of Culture in Trinidad and Tobago, Astor Johnson’s Repertoire Dance Company, the Noble Douglas Dance Company in Trinidad and many others. Sonny designed and constructed costumes for the Cultural Dance Troupe of the West Indies Inc. in Hartford Ct. USA, for their annual dance production of “Cultural Spectacular” from 2000 to 2009. Sonny Salina is a respected artist who works independently and collaboratively with many companies both nationally and internationally.  He is a believer in excellence and so his works exemplifies a high level of professionalism.

 

Participants of these workshops will have an opportunity to perform at the annual Tucson Meet Yourself on Saturday, October 9th starting at 7pm. Tucson Meet Yourself sponsors these workshops and Sticks and Fingers a Caribbean Folk Group will provide live music for the classes!!!!

 

Dates:  Tuesday and Thursday, October 5th and 7th, 2010 from 5:30 to 6:40pm at the Dunbar Culture Center, 325 W. 2nd Street. Advance Fees: $20.-. Adults & $14.- Students/Youth, At the door: $12.- Adults & $8.- Students/Youth. For more information call:  Barbea Williams, (520) 628-7785.
