Borderlands Theater, on a precarious border of its own, launches an urgent appeal for funding to keep its doors open.

Tucson, AZ   - -Just 12 days ago,Borderlands Theater  sent out an emergency urgent appeal to its  supporters, both  locally and nationally, to raise $20,000 to keep its doors open:   $8,000 to be raised by  June 30 and another $12,000 by July 20. While a large  portion of the funds still have to be raised,  today Borderlands is  proud to announce  it has reached a milestone in its emergency fundraising campaign, having raised more than $9,000 to date with $11,000 still to go.  Barclay Goldsmith, producting director , reports that support has come from small and a few large individual donors both from Tucson and across the country.

Borderlands recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a successful Annual Pachanga fundraiser. While ticket sales were up this season and the gala fundraiser generated income, discretionary  individual giving in larger amounts and funding from grants and foundations continues to decline and ticket purchases cover only about 40 percent of production costs.  And as supporters know, Borderlands Theater champions the development and production of NEW plays with NEW playwrights and as a founding member of the National New Play Network has demonstrated this with collaborations with other theaters across the country and in Mexico. Borderlands is known nationally and internationally for supporting all voices of the region, including our core Latino/Chicano/Mexicano voices.  We are known for partnering with numerous area organizations committed to civic action,  and our Education Outreach Program has reached countless young people, especially in rural communities in Southern Arizona.

Need more reasons to donate?  Last season’s notable productions included  two world premiers  reflecting Arizona. The first was “Arizona: No Roosters In The Desert”, written by Kara Hartzler and based on field work by Anna Ochoa O’Leary. It had three rolling premiers in Mexico City, Tucson and Chicago and won critic’s praise.  Borderlands plans to present it again this fall. The second was Martin Zimmerman’s “White Tie Ball, which the Arizona Daily Star called “ strong and provocative Theater.” If we are successful in successfully raising the next $11,000 with continued support from donors, we will announce our next season immediately after July 20th.

To meet the current challenges,  Borderlands has streamlined and reduced box office hours and other overhead, following the lead of other theaters for online ticketing and information/outreach through social networking.  We will deepen our commitment to developing and producing new works with our collaborations with NNPN, the programs at the Kennedy Center for the performing Art, and Arena Stage, both in Washington, D.C. ,as well as theaters  in Mexico.

Donating is easy. Borderlands welcomes any amount but would like to remind arts supporters that if everyone can reach into their pockets with an amount of $10, $20, or even $30, the theater will reach its  goal in no time and will end this campaign successfully. Donors may use the DONATE NOW button on its website,  http://borderlandstheater.org/about.htm, or by  sending a check in the mail (Borderlands Theater, P.O. Box 2791, Tucson, AZ, 85702); donors can also call our office (520-882-8607) to make other arrangements.
