He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland

Burns' poems are both romatic and comedic. Among his best known poems are To A Mouse, Tam O'Shanter, A Red, Red Rose and My Heart's in the Highlands.

"I'm a good girl, I am!"

Pygmalion

by

G. Bernard Shaw

Opens May 23

Liza Doolittle, a poor flower girl, understands that if she wants to improve her position in life, she must improve the way she speaks. She calls on Professor Henry Higgins to arrange for speech lessons.  Higgins, intrigued by the prospect of teaching her, makes a bet with his associate that he can pass her off as a lady at the ambassador's garden party in six months time.

Thus, the table is set for one of the greatest plays ever written.  George Bernard Shaw wrote Pygmalion in 1912 and based it on the Greek mythological story of the sculptor Pygmalion and the statue he carves, Galatea.  Pygmalion so loved his statue that it came to life.

That's where the similarity to the Greek story ends.  Liza and Higgins certainly don't fall in love.  Liza not only learns to speak properly, she learns that can live an independent, productive life well above her humble beginnings.  Shaw's Pygmalion is a sharp lampoon of British social classes and the beginning of woman's rights.

In 1956, six years after Shaw's death, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe adapted Pygmalion into the well-known musical play My Fair Lady.

The Comedy Playhouse is proud to present the cast of Pygmalion: staring Nicolette Shaffer, Greg Camper, Michael Candela, Bruce Bieszki, Cristin Phibbs, and Hilary Pursehouse and featuring MaryLou Duckworth, Jackie Moreno, and Skyler Stokes.

Pygmalion opens May 23rd and continues through June 29th.  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.  Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.   Pygmalion is appropriate for ages eight and up.

Coming July 4, 5 and 6…

The Comedy Genius

of

Ben Franklin

In the great tradition of American humor the title of "First American Humorist" rightfully belong to Ben Franklin.

Besides being one of the "Founding Fathers of the United States," Ben Franklin was a diplomat, inventor, scientist, postmaster, printer and statesman.  As a printer he published Poor Richards Almanac under the pseudonym of Richard Saunders.  In between the star charts and planting charts and other information in the almanac there was space to fill. so, Franklin wrote humorous essays.

Franklin developed a satirical style of writing that examined the political personal and social issues of the time.  In this way his writing was accessible to even the barely literate and he was able to spread his thoughts to the general public.

The Comedy Genius of Ben Franklin stars Paul Hammack and Bruce Bieszki.

The Comedy Genius of Ben Franklin runs July 4, 5 and 6 only.  (Only ONE Matinee).  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.  Admission is $12.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.   The Comedy Genius of Ben Franklin is appropriate for ages eight and up.
