JAZZ CHAMPIONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Hot off their amazing victory blowing all the other contenders from high school jazz bands coast to coast right off the stage at the Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Tucson Jazz Institute’s own Ellington Big Band will blow down the Berger Center right here in the Baked Apple with a celebration concert Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m.
Hear the music that so impressed Wynton Marsalis and the other judges, bringing TJI its third consecutive trophy in this esteemed national event for student jazzers.
Also on the program at the Berger are four other TJI big bands: the Jazz Workshop band(where Scott Black works his magic with the newbies), and the Concord Combo, will get their own showcases; the Concord Combo, directed by Brice Winston, won 1st place in the Next Generation Festival in Monterey, California, just a little while ago and they will be performing in the Monterey Jazz Festival this September.
The Basie Band will open the show and the Ellington Band will close the show.
It’s all happening at the Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd., (on the campus of the AZ School for the Deaf & Blind).
Tickets: $20 adults, $15 seniors/students, free for children 11 and under. Tickets may be purchased online at: http://tucsonjazzinstitute.com/tickets.html
AND THAT’S NOT ALL
At the Fox Tucson Theatre downtown, on June 14 at 7 p.m. for the monthly 2nd Saturdays fest, these jazz champions will be taking it to the stage once more.
