The Royale
A power-packed boxing drama
The Royale is not your usual sports play. First of all, it is not really about life in the ring. Second, not a single punch will be thrown, at least not with fists. Set in 1910, deep in the midst of Jim Crow, the story is loosely based on the life of Jack Johnson, the world's first African-American heavyweight boxing champion. The play explores one man's struggle while reflecting a much broader one. It is also a play about a brother and his sister - his sister, who as he climbs for glory and respect, remains his greatest adversary and strongest motivation.
