Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre opens "Page on the Stage" - TTA coupon offer

Beowulf Alley Theatre opens "Page on the Stage"

We're Ready to Share Three New Plays from Three Local Playwrights...

Join us in the comfort of our air-conditioned theatre for some summer fun!

And as a special bonus for TTA List Members, please enjoy a refreshing beverage on us!  Just go to this webpage and print your coupon: http://beowulfalley.org/html/tta_coupon.html.

Three teams of actors, directors and playwrights, along with a talented technical team, have been in workshops over the last six weeks preparing three new plays for your enjoyment. Now they are ready to be presented on the Beowulf Alley Theatre stage.

Writing a play is a solitary process. There is a story to tell. Each character must be developed. What is the setting? How is it all connected? All of this comes from the playwright's mind as words are applied to the paper. The story is read and re-read, facts are checked, new ideas pop up and pages are re-written until the playwright is confident that the work has merit and meaning on the PAGE.

For each of our three playwrights, we have brought a team of actors and a director together to see the plays through different eyes, new thoughts, and new interpretations arise as they breathe life into the playwright's work. For several days a week, actors have been on STAGE, working with the director and playwright, page-by-page, scene-by-scene, to develop more clarity and understanding of the themes. The playwrights have returned to rehearsals with a new set of pages, new or modified words on the page to refine thoughts and more clearly convey their stories. And now, it is time to put the PAGE ON THE STAGE!

Please join us over the next three weeks to experience full, black-box productions of three diverse plays by three local playwrights, John Vornholt, Gavin Kayner and Jonathan Northover. We'll ask you for your feedback. We'll discuss your thoughts, ideas, interpretations and perceptions and you'll have the opportunity to play a role in the making of a play that someday could be seen on stages locally, regionally, on Broadway or London's West End - or maybe - on Beowulf Alley's stage in the near future.

The First Third by John Vornholt, directed by Dave Sewell.

Cast - Jeff Scotland, Ryan Amstutz, Sukhdan Baron, Joshua Silvain, Royce Sparks, and Michael Guyll.

Performances are at 7:30p on June 30, July 4, 9, 15 & 17 and 1:30p on July 3 & 11.

The Language of Flowers by Gavin Kayner, directed by Steve Anderson.

Cast - Brian Taraz, Kristina Sloan and Robin Van Auken.

Tickets are $30 for a 3-play package or $12 each for one or two plays. After June 29, tickets will be $15 each at the door or by phone but you can still purchase the $30 package and the individual plays for $12 online. For more information about the plays and performance dates and times, please go to http://beowulfalley.org/html/tta_coupon.html or call us at (520) 882-0555 for more information. There is a student/military rush ticket for $10, cash at the door with ID, 15 minutes before performance.

The Rogue Theatre

A Concert of Medieval Music
Wednesday, July 7, 7:30 P.M.

at The Historic Y, 300 E. University

Tucson, AZ   520-551-2053   www.TheRogueTheatre.org

Admission: Pay-What-You-Will

Box office opens one hour before curtain
No advance reservations

In anticipation of next season's production of Boccaccio's "Decameron", the Rogue Theatre will present a light-hearted evening of 14th century Italian and French vocal and instrumental music. Internationally renowned lutenist Crawford Young joins Rogue musician and singer Harlan Hokin for the Rogue's first concert.  Both Harlan and Crawford are well-known and seasoned practitioners of medieval and renaissance music. Our program will consist of pieces that would have been familiar to the characters in the Decameron. Rogue friend and collaborator Patrick Baliani is in the midst of creating a new translation and dramatization of Boccaccio's "Decameron" that will be the Rogue's fifth production of the 2010-11 season.

Crawford Young
graduated from New England Conservatory and studied medieval music with Thomas Binkley prior to joining the medieval quartet Sequentia in Cologne. Young is director and founder of two prominent medieval ensembles, Boston-based Project Ars Nova and the Ferrara Ensemble of Basel, which won a Diapason d'Or de l'Annee and was a finalist for Gramophone's Early Music Recording of the Year. Since 1982 Young has taught lute and Interpretation and Performance Practice at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.

Harlan Hokin is well known to Rogue audiences.  He has performed extensively as a solo singer and director with many international early music ensembles including Sequentia and P.A.N., and did a stint with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival somewhere in the mists of history. He earned a doctorate in historical performance practice from Stanford, and has taught at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz. Harlan is an active workshop teacher and writer on topics of interest to singers and early music performers, and teaches music theory and literature at Pima Community College. He has served the Rogue as music director since its inception, and acted as vocal director for Arizona Onstage's production of Assassins. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Early Music Society, and is the father of two nearly perfect former children.  Harlan was a student at the Schola Cantorum (where Crawford now teaches) many long moons ago.

Carolyn Hokin, singer, as well as various Rogue actors, will join Crawford and Harlan for this concert.

Tucson: Studio Connections - SYLVIA - Extended to 7/3!

From: Studio Connections [mailto:info@studioconnections.net]

Subject: SYLVIA - Extended to 7/3!

Due to an overwhelming audience response, we are happily extending SYLVIA, by A.R. Gurney, for two additional performances on 7/2 and 7/3 at 7:30pm.

Tickets are available through http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/112597 or reserve by phone at 520-731-1559.

Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney; a modern romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog.

Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park -- bearing only the name Sylvia on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. Add the fact that Sylvia is played by a vivacious young woman and you view the relationship in a whole new way. *Contains mature language*

A.R. Gurney, author of The Dining Room and Love Letters, charms with his comedy, which has been a hit in the United States and internationally.

Directed by Maria Alburtus; Produced by Robert Encila for Studio Connections.

Starring Lissa Staples, Rick Shipman, and Teresa Vasquez as Sylvia; featuring Jacob Brown and Chad Collins.

Tucson: Auditions, original Mystery Dinner Theatre production, FoxPaws Productions

From: DD Jay [mailto:ddjay1@cox.net]
Sent: Friday, June 25, 2010 10:38 AM
Subject: two submissions

Play audition notice:

FoxPaws Productions

Auditions for actor-writers for an original Mystery Dinner Theatre production will be August 27th and 28th. 7 women and one man. Place TBA.

This as yet unnamed show will be written an a improv-collaborative writing technique. From feedback from previous FoxPaws actors: this promises to be one of the most creative things you will ever do. Since you will develop your own character, our characters have more depth than many comedy formats. The show is very interactive, with actors roaming through the “diners” and answering questions in between acts.

Because this is written from an improv base, there are three session of improv happening in the next three weeks.(June 29, July 6 and 15) Experienced? Come brush up your skills. Newbie? Come learn some of the games that will be folded into our final scenes.

The theme that we were given from our sponsoring organization, the  American Association of University Women,  is Women’s Equity.  The setting is a competition of costume making companies vying for funding for a new location in Green Valley.  There will be a murder, of course.

The gimmick that we are using is “channeling” of famous women. If the right actresses audition, I would love to see a Rosa Parks, a Mother Jones, a Dorothy Huerta, an Eleanor Roosevelt…..  Or pick a famous woman that fits your skill set: If we cast singers, there will be singing, keyboard, guitar? Each actor will do some research to bring some facts to the production, but overall it is all in good fun and played for laughs.

The guy? Think positive, we don’t want to make a scapegoat of him. He will have an equal role and say in the writing process.

There is no pay, but you do get fed. Two performances - October 30, evening and October 31 matinee. This leaves you with a great costume and free for Halloween.

Rehearsals and performances are in Sahuarita.

Three Week improv Series – FoxPaws Improv Troupe

Just for fun or to build theatre and writing skills? You decide.

I put together a list of games for each evening and we explore the possibilities of each until it -or we- are depleted. Games range from classics that I saw 30 years ago, the day I fell in love with improv, to new games that we find or develop, the goals are the same: Laugh, Think, Be Merry.

The class is most effective when there are experienced people and those who are doing their first explorations of improv. All are welcome.

This short series does stresses games that are useful in developing sketches and scenes for larger productions. I have the games grouped into improbable categories like Juxtaposition, Convergence, Vignettes and Status. Harold is my man!

There is a $10.00 donation  to ShoeString Players suggested.
