Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Chorale & College Singers, under the new direction of Dr. Jonathan Ng, presents its fall concert with a wide range of repertoire from 13th century plainsong to 19th and 20th century choral masterpieces. The Chorale will perform arrangements based on the 13th century plainsong “Divinum Mysterium,” the hymn tune “Grosser Gott,” and several folk songs including “Simple Gifts” and “Morning Has Broken.” The College Singers will present American and British folk song arrangements, spirituals and excerpts from “Vocal Quartet Opus 92” by Johannes Brahms. Both choruses will join to perform “Five Mystical Songs” by Ralph Vaughan William, written for baritone solo and mixed chorus.
Dr. Jonathan Ng received his Doctorate in Conducting with minors in vocal performance and pedagogy, music history and literature from Indiana University School of Music. He earned his master’s degree in conducting and church music from Westminster Choir College, and bachelor’s degree in education from the Institute of Education in Hong Kong. Besides conducting choruses and orchestras, Dr. Ng is a professional lyric tenor and has appeared in various oratorios and operas throughout the states, Europe and Hong Kong. In the summer of 2008, Dr. Ng sang four operatic roles—Goro in MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Monostatos, Priest and Armor Man in DIE ZAUBERFLOTE at Magnani Opera Theater, Fidenza and Verdi Theater, Busseto, Italy. In the summer of 2006, he was the soloist for a European tour honoring Mozart’s 250th Anniversary. The concerts took place in Prague, Brno and Vienna where the grand finale took place in the world-renowned cathedral—Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church). Dr. Ng has appeared as an orchestral and choral conductor for various groups all through the states. In May 2007, he made his Carnegie Hall debut conducting Vivaldi’s “Gloria” accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble. He is the director of Pima Community College Chorale and College Singers, where he also teaches studio voice. Dr. Ng is currently the founder and conductor of The Arizona Choral Society and the director of music at Catalina United Methodist Church, Tucson.
