May-hem: Dance Concerts, Blues Concerts, & Workshops!

Greetings!

May is here and Mayhem with it (in a good way)! This weekend we're sharing the stage in a fabulous double-bill dance concert with ConDanza Repertory Company, who received a terrific writeup by Magaret Regan in this week's Tucson Weekly. Read it here: "ConDanza with ZUZI!" Then next Saturday, May 9th, we're hosting a big blues concert with Heather Hardy, Greg Davidson, and some very talented local blues musicians at the inaugural Bluesy ZUZI! evening of drinks, dancing, and music. In addition to our most popular classes, throughout May we will be running several very special workshops. Check 'em out below. Also, our first High Flyin' Arts Camp is nearly full, so if you're planning to register for camps, you'd better do it soon! ...Phew! that's a lot of stuff going on in May. We're ready for ya!

Come in. Be moved.

Borderlands Theater presents Unearthing Histories in Barrio Monologues

Unearthing Histories in Barrio Monologues:

Youth perform dramatic readings of Tucson's Hispanic Heritage

Borderlands Theater presents an afternoon of dramatic readings of monologues, with an introduction by Dr. Lydia Otero. Pan dulce and refreshments provided. Students from Trio Upward Bound Program at Pima's Desert Vista campus will perform monologues, shaped from interview transcriptions of former inhabitants of Tucson's oldest barrio, sometimes known as Barrio Libre or La Calle, neighboring El Hoyo. This event marks the end of phase 1 of the Barrio Stories Project. This performance is the culmination of a college credit course, Theatricalizing Oral Histories, where students interviewed primary informants with the assistance of an Anthropologist from the University of Arizona's Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology. Students worked in Anna Deveare Smith's style of docu-drama theatre, where writer performers take on the personas of the people they interviewed. One of the goals of the class, taught by Milta Ortiz, is as Ana Deveare Smith says, "to take that broad leap into the other." By taking on someone's words and becoming them, we learn much about the other and ourselves, and in this case, uncover lost history.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY:

The event will take place on the Tucson Convention Center grounds at the Sosa-Carillo-Fremont House in an effort to pay homage to the old Barrio. Most of the rediscovered history of the old Barrio takes place in an around the area between Main and Congress, making the Sosa-Carillo-Fremont House a prime location for the event. The Arizona Historical Society is proud to collaborate on this project to celebrate Tucson history and its cultural roots.

MORE ON THE BARRIO STORIES PROJECT

Led by new Producing Director, Marc David Pinate and funded by the MetLife Foundation, administered by Theatre Communications Group, and the Arizona Humanities, the Barrio Stories Project will utilize cross-sector partnerships to collect oral histories from the residents of Tucson's historic barrios. These narratives will be theatricalized and performed in sight-specific locations. The first iteration of the initiative will focus on Barrio Libre, Tucson's original Mexican-American enclave that was demolished with the construction of the Tucson Convention Center. Pinate hopes to enlist the cooperation of the city and perform the work on the grounds of the Tucson Convention Center with promenade style staging. The play will open in March 2016 as part of Borderlands' 30th anniversary season.

Dr. Lydia Otero, a historian and author of the book, La Calle (University of Arizona Press), which chronicles the history of Barrio Libre and its ultimate displacement, has signed on as a project consultant. In Phase 1, Borderlands will engage high school juniors and seniors in the Trio Upward Bound Program in partnership with the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology at the University of Arizona to collect oral histories from surviving residents of Barrio Libre. Borderlands Theater is working with Pima College to offer participating youth college credit for their efforts. The inter-generational passing down of collective memory from elders to youth is a key component of the project. In Phase 2, the full interview transcripts will be sent to three nationally recognized playwrights to turn into a play script. Award winning writers, Elaine Romero, Virginia Grise and Martín Zimmerman, have been confirmed.

This standing room only, annual event is the first chance to see original films from the UA Film & Television program before they travel the world to major international film festivals, such as Sundance, Napa Valley, Sedona and Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale), which internationally premiered the 2014 UA thesis film, Bloodlines, by Christopher Cegielski in February, 2015.

The graduating BFA filmmakers will compete for the Fancy New Filmmaker Award, and the Hanson Film Institute Award for Best Production Design, among many others.

From Wade Shields' horror-musical mash-up, Slashed!, to Omar Lopez's Nowhere, inspired by the late Bisbee husband and wife musical duo, Amy and Derrick Ross, a.k.a. Nowhere Man and A Whiskey Girl, this year's thesis films are as varied as they are original."It's a slice of their life as I imagined it, but a very unfortunate, beautiful slice," said Lopez, who said he never knew the duo in life, but was moved by their story's end.

This year's BFA thesis film competition will be judged by Claudette Godfrey, the Short Film Programmer for the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas; Herb Stratford, Program Director, Napa Valley Film Festival; and Joe Garrity, Senior Filmmaker-in-Residence in Production Design at the American Film Institute Conservatory, who is also a Los Angeles-based production designer.

"This year, we are welcoming many great sponsors from the film industry, including Fancy PostEntertainment Partners, the creator of Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling, Pollution StudiosOther World Computing, as well as theUA Hanson Film Institute. These sponsors are offering wonderful and meaningful awards to celebrate our talented students' accomplishments and help them continue to make films."

Notable alumni include Academy Award-winning director, Ari Sandel; producer, Scott Stuber; 20th Century Fox's John Kilkenny; and local filmmaker and music video director, Alex Italics, who was recently featured on the cover of the Tucson Weekly.
