Creativity and Experimentation Thrive in The Studio Series Devised Work Generator: Death of Arthur

Tucson, AZ - The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television Studio Series is excited to present a new, creative work devised by Theatre Studies students, and driven by dedication and imagination.
The Studio Series latest production, Generator: Death of Arthur, is the result of students of various theatre disciplines collaborating in a playmaking experience. The process began with approximately 30 students gathering in a rehearsal space. After five weeks of development and 80 hours of rehearsal time, Generator: Death of Arthur, was conceived and this work in process is ready for audiences.
This new work was conceived and co-directed by four generative dramaturgy graduate students and created under the supervision of Assistant Professor Greg Pierotti, co-writer/devisor of The Laramie Project, Laramie: 10 Years Later, The People’s Temple and B More. The goal of this piece was to develop a performance based on the source text of Arthurian Legend, Le Morte D’Arthur. This is the same source text for many well-known tales of Arthur including the musical Camelot and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Generator: Death of Arthur is not only a unique piece, but it is also a reflection of the Studio Series’ approach to theatre. It is not traditional, and it is an environment where creativity and experimentation thrive. Professor Pierotti is an expert in this approach and has co-authored a new book, Moment Work, that further explores this subject matter. Pierotti’s book, set to be released on April 17, is a primer on many of the methods used by the ensemble to develop Generator: Death of Arthur. The performance is not a final production, but a representation of dramatic moments in a theatrical sequence. It is creativity in process that invites the audience along for the experience, and it is nothing less than exciting.
“Generator: Death of Arthur promises a good bit of levity, while simultaneously taking on some serious contemporary themes,” explains Pierotti. “There is one guarantee, it will be unlike any Arthurian adventure the audience has ever seen before.”
