What Happens to Art after the Apocalypse?

"I think I can handle anything if I know what it is. I just can't manage the dread." –Maria, Act I

At the start of Anne Washburn's Mr. Burns, a post-electric playsomething has gone terribly wrong. Catastrophic events have led to a total loss of electricity, nuclear meltdown, and a breakdown of society as we know it. As people flee from coastal city centers, a group of survivors meet around a campfire and do what humans have always done – tell a story, in this case, the "Cape Feare" episode of The Simpsons.

Seven years later, the survivors take their live re-enactment of the episode complete with commercials on a national tour via horse and cart.

Seventy-five years later, the episode has become a highly stylized musical battle between good and evil. The New York Times compares Mr. Burns to Boccaccio's The Decameron and the grand musical finale is described by Vulture Magazine as "equal parts Brecht and Bart, Homer and the other Homer."

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play by Anne Washburn won the 2014 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play.
