AUDITION NOTICE

Next Stage Theatre Southwest, which captivated Tucson audiences with the edgy Venus in Fur this past January, is pleased to announce auditions for its next production: Halley Feiffer's devastating AT Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City. A dark comedy that intermixes disease, suffering, loss and death with raunchy humor and sex, Funny Thing opened to rave reviews at New York's MCC Theatre and has played to similar accolades across the country. A Tucson premier, this production will run at the Cabaret space of the Temple of Music and Art for 12 shows between November 18 and December 4, 2022. Rehearsals will begin roughly October 1. There will be very competitive stipends.

The play has the following roles:

  • Karla (female, lead): charismatic woman in her early 30s whose pretty face and somewhat childlike demeanor belie an incredibly dirty mouth and mind, which she uses to mask her own pain from both her mother's illness and personal tragedy. ALREADY CAST.
  • Don (male, lead): an unassuming man in his late 40s. The kind of person you would never notice walking down the street. Has been through much stress in life and especially recently. A raging temper masks gaping wounds from marital loss, estrangement from his son, and his mother's cancer.
  • Marcie (female, major supporting): Karla's mother, late 50s, recovering from a hysterectomy to treat stage I endometrial cancer. Her dry wit belies oceans of pain and an abusive, selfish cruelty — but blended with moments of deep love and tender vulnerability.
  • Geena (female, supporting): Don's mother, late 60s, has been battling ovarian cancer for seven years. Brave, tired, very near death.

Auditions will be from 5:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 28-29, at the Arizona Rose Theater, which is located on the lower level of the Tucson Mall directly behind the Container Store and right next to Macy's. Callbacks, if needed, will be on Saturday, July 2 from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm at the same location. Auditions will consist primarily of readings from the script, and sides will be provided to auditioners in advance. Short monologues from contemporary works are welcome but not required.

Those wishing to audition should register by emailing the director, Mark Klugheit, at mklugheit@comcast.net and should feel free also to email or call (520-907-7209) with any questions. Please bring a hard copy resume and headshot to the audition.
