ACT 1

Stand: Stand (or sit) for an hour (or less) with a saguaro cactus in Saguaro National Park or anywhere a saguaro grows. If you stood with a saguaro for an hour, what would you learn? Post your experiences online to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #IStandWithSaguaros.

#IStandWithSaguaros is a campaign to befriend, support, and connect with the saguaro cactus, Carnegiea gigantea, iconic species of the Sonoran Desert. If you stood with a saguaro cactus for an hour, what would you discover? Try it.

How to participate?

1. STAND (or sit) with a saguaro in Saguaro National Park (or anywhere) from April 16-May 31, 2016. (NOTE dates of campaign: FB only allows an event to be listed at 2 weeks)

2. POST your discoveries and a photo of you and your saguaro with #IStandWithSaguaros to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Additional identifiers: #SaguaroNationalPark #BorderlandsTheater #ImagineYourParks #NPS100 and on Twitter @BLTheater, @SaguaroNPS, @NEAarts

When?

April 16-May 31, 2016

Where?

Organized group "stands" will take place in Saguaro National Park (east and west) and in urban Tucson by dancers, dignitaries, poets, musicians, scientists, youth, seniors, scientists, and other advocates. To join a stand, visit the schedule as it is made available at www.HowToDuetWithASaguaro.com. If you'd like to organize your own group stand, let us know!

#IStandWithSaguaros is a project of Borderlands Theater, under guest director Kimi Eisele, to bring dance and theater activities and performances to Saguaro National Park. It is an "Imagine Your Parks" project, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts in honor of the National Park Service's Centennial year.

I learned that I can love a thing without having to become it.

-TC

I felt like I got to know my cactus. I had a real affection for him or her before I parted. I felt gratitude.

-Lisa

-By the end of the hour I really started to identify with the saguaro more than with the humans behind me. I started to feel part of the landscape rather than a visitor.

-Kristen
