The Community Players, Tucson's premier community theatre company, has announced the opening of their Second Annual New One Act Play Festival. "The Festival is actually the culmination of a 9 month long submission period," explains Scott Berg, President of the board for The Community Players. Interested writers have from now until April 1, 2017 to submit a new, never published, never produced, one act play. The plays are then scored on four criteria; plot, character development, dialogue and overall writing quality by a panel of independent judges. The three top scoring plays will be produced by The Community Players as an evening of one acts running July 14-23, 2017. "One thing about "festivals" that I personally find frustrating is they generally only happen for a day, or a weekend if you are lucky," adds Berg, "we decided to run the shows for 2 weekends so that more people will have an opportunity to come and support the very talented playwrights in our community."
According to Berg, response was better than expected from the writing community due to the number of submissions received during the First Annual New Play Festival. "There are very few opportunities for playwrights to see their work come alive on stage in Tucson," said Bobbi Whitson, board vice president, "we are thrilled to help make their dream a reality." The Community Players is the first community theatre company to hold an annual competition focusing on Arizona playwrights. "In a city where the mantra is "buy local, shop local, eat local", we felt it time to remind people to "support local theatre arts" and that includes very talented writers. After all, Shakespeare was at one point in his career, a local writer. And look what a little support did for him," concluded Berg. For a complete set of rules and guidelines go to www.communityplayerstucson.org. The Community Playhouse, the home of The Community Players is located at 1881 N. Oracle Road. The First Annual New One Act Play Festival will be running July 8th - July 17th, 2016. Shows are Friday and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm and admission is only $10. You don't have to wait until next year to start supporting local theatre arts.
