Southern Arizona Women's Chorus Presents "Spanish Allelu"

TUCSON, AZ – This holiday season take a musical trip to Spain with the 50-voice Southern Arizona Women's Chorus on Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.

"We will be traveling to San Sebastian, Spain in June of 2020 for the Festival of Women's and Treble Voices so we are starting now with some Spanish repertoire and Flamenco dancers," said Terrie Ashbaugh, longtime artistic director of the chorus, as well as director of worship and business manager at Ascension Lutheran Church.

"We will be working with American composer Andrea Ramsey and Spanish composer Eva Ugalde."

The program is called "Spanish Allelu." Ashbaugh said, "We will begin the concert with some Spanish-oriented holiday songs such as 'Fum, Fum, Fum,' 'A La Nanita Na' and 'Ocho Kandelikas.' Then we'll head for Spain with an original song by Ugalde titled "Gaur Arbola" along with Spanish ballads and 'Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia,' which translates to 'I'll sing all the day.' "

This program will be presented twice. The first SAWC concert is on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6:00p.m. at the Hope City Church, 5729 E. 22nd St. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through www.viadedios.org

The second performance will be Sunday, Dec. 22 at 3:00 pm at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1220 W Magee Rd. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20 or ordered online with a fee added at www.southernarizonawomenschorus.org. Call 404-3148 for more information

SAWC is pronounced like saucy. "We are saucy women having a fine time singing together," Ashbaugh said. "Our mission is to perform a versatile and varied choral repertoire for women's voices in order to benefit and educate the diverse Southern Arizona community and beyond." The chorus presents two major concerts a year, plus numerous community outreach programs throughout the season, including some daytime and some evening events.

Ashbaugh has led SAWC since 1998 and conducted the chorus in its 2006 Carnegie Hall debut. The chorus' roots date to 1981.The repertoire spans from classical music to Broadway, folk, jazz, spiritual, seasonal and other popular songs. SAWC is a member of Chorus America and the Arizona Choral Arts Association, which Ashbaugh founded.

Ashbaugh grew up as a military brat and lived in several countries before the age of 9. She began her music career at age 14 when she taught herself to play the organ for her neighbor's church. She's accompanied choirs in church and schools from that time on. She also sang solos and eventually became a choir director.
