BORDERLANDS THEATER TO PRESENT THE PLAY CONJUNTO BY OLIVER MAYER, APRIL
20-30 AT THE LEO RICH THEATRE (TUCSON CONVENTION CENTER, 260 S. CHURCH
AVENUE)
Conjunto tells the story of Japanese, Filipino and Mexican American field
hands who labor together on a farm belonging to Min, a Japanese-American.
Against the backdrop of World War II and the threat of internment for
Japanese Americans, the characters cope with their difficult lives by
fantasizing about the popular icons of their day. A growing attraction
between Mins new Japanese bride and his Mexican foreman blossoms as they
till the soil and share their dreams. Playwright Oliver Mayer tells the
story with passion and humor, evoking an uncanny parallel with the issues we
face today. Directed by Armando Molina.
Playwright Oliver Mayer is the author of Blade to the Heat, which premiered
at the Public Theatre and was subsequently produced in Los Angeles, San
Francisco, Chicago, and Mexico City. Other plays include: Joe Louis Blues,
Ragged Time, Out of the Fringe, Joy of the Desolate, The Road to Los
Angeles, Young Valiant, Bold as Love, and Dias Y Flores. Mr. Mayer received
a Gerbode grant to write the libretto for America Tropical, a new opera
composed by David Conte to premiere in 2006 in San Francisco. He is an
Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, a graduate of
Cornell and Columbia Universities and studied at Worcester College, Oxford.
Conjunto was developed at the Sundance Lab, San Jose Repertory Theatre and
the Mark Taper Forum New Work Festival. It was produced by Teatro Vision,
San Jose, CA in 2003.
