ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY GALA 2007 HONORS THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA SCHOOL OF THEATRE ARTS
Featuring over thirty UA students performing songs and stunts
Celebrate the launch of Tucson’s arts season with Arizona Theatre Company’s annual Gala Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the historic Temple of Music and Art at 330 S. Scott Avenue in downtown Tucson. Dine and dance under the stars with ATC artists, supporters and staff. Governor Janet Napolitano and UA President Dr. Robert and Mrs. Adrian Shelton serve as honorary chairs. Co-chairs for the 2007 Gala are Harold and Maedell Dixon.

Among those attending will be Honorary Chair UA President Dr. Robert and Mrs. Adrian Shelton, and Mayor Robert and Mrs. Beth Walkup as guests of Shirley Chann.

The evening begins at 5:00 PM with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception in the courtyard of the Temple, followed by the Gala performance of Hershey Felder as Monsieur Chopin. After the performance, attendees will enjoy cuisine by Carte Blanche Catering and CafĂ© a la Carte. Joe Bourne and Friends will delight audiences with an eclectic blend of popular music themes from the Great American Song Book to dance the night away!

Monsieur Chopin begins at Fryderyk Chopin’s salon in Paris. As Monsieur Chopin’s piano lesson unfolds, he reveals secrets about the art of the piano and composition, as well as secrets about himself. Considered by his contemporaries, and now by history, as the true “Poet of the Piano,” Monsieur Chopin features some of the pianist-composer’s most beautiful and endearing music.

This year, ATC will honor The University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts with the 2007 Georgy Award, named after longtime Tucsonan and ATC Trustee Emeritus George Rosenberg. The Georgy Award is presented annually to recognize the significant impact that certain individuals or organizations have had on ATC and on the arts in Arizona.

Co-chair and University Distinguished Professor Harold Dixon said, “At this year’s Gala, we really want to highlight the great relationship and ‘cross pollination’ between Arizona Theater Company and the University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts.”

Over the past ten seasons ATC has been partnered with The University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts and is fortunate to work with the U of A’s talented faculty members as actors, combat instructors, dialect coaches and designers. U of A students perform and understudy roles in ATC shows each year with amazing success.

Accentuating this year’s Gala will be a design show featuring the work of UA Theatre Arts Technical and Design majors; a vocal performance of “Make Our Garden Grow” from the UA Theatre Arts production of Candide; a thrilling staged fight sequence; and a performance of a selection of Rogers and Hart songs by the freshmen Encore performers.

Arizona Theatre Company’s 2007 Gala is its major fundraiser of the year to support education and community-based programs that enhance the theatre experience and foster artists and audiences for the future. Generous support for this event has been provided by Joan and Donald Diamond as Diamond Sponsors; The Jim Click Automotive Team the Platinum Sponsor; and Paul and Alice Baker, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Frances Chapin Foundation, and Wells Fargo as Gold Sponsors.

Tickets for this black tie event are available for $200 each or a table of ten for $2000. For information on sponsoring a UA student or faculty member, reservations or to make a ticket purchase contact Sandra Um at 520.884.8210 x 8302.
