TPAC Arts Advocacy Network

One week and two days until the Day of Action in Support of the Arts...
We need you (yes, you!) to be a part of the Day of Action on Monday, May 3. How, you ask?

Participate in one of the TPACAAN events... We're planning several for May 3; more info will be available soon. For now, go to the calendar RSVP to let us know your attending/planning to participate, and share the event with your Facebook and MySpace friends.

Plan and do your own event ... and add it to the calendar so others from the network can join in-- and we can help promote it. A couple Guiding Principles for Actions:
• Keep it clean, accessible, clear in the message.
• Keep the message to the talking points.

Post updates on the Day of Action: On May 3, we will need many people to photograph, videotape, and write about actions as they occur--and post them everywhere (including the TPACAAN site). So, if you're one of those super social media networkers (and you know who you are!), please plan on Tweeting, blogging, status-updating on the Day of Action.

And speaking of message, we have put together a few talking points for the "Save Public Funding for TPAC" campaign. (You'll find them under the "Take Action" menu on the site.)

Check the site often--or subscribe to the RSS feed, or make sure your profile is set to receive emails from the network--to stay in the know about the Day of Action!

174 online signatures and climbing... let's reach 1,000
As of Saturday morning, there were 174 signatures on the online petition. Let's get 826 more this coming week.  If you haven't already signed, visit the site,  click the add your name button at the top of the page,  and sign the petition.  Then ask your friends, colleagues, associates, and family to sign--even if they don't live in Tucson. We also want folks who visit southern Arizona and enjoy our arts to sign.  You can send people to the easy-to-remember TucsonPetition.org--thanks to Julie R. and Denise U.

A few comments by petition signers:
"Although there are many competing interests for the limited budget, the arts act as an invaluable magnet for the city and county."

"The arts enrich everyone's life in Tucson, plus make it a desirable destination for tourists. Having a vital arts community is one marker of a vital city. I think arts funding is like making sourdough bread. The funding is like an investment in the starter. Once added to the ingredients of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, arts educators, etc., it overflows on its own over time. Tucson would be a dull place without the subsidized celebrations we've come to enjoy so much. Please continue your commitment to fund the arts."

"As a retired business owner... I would like you all to know that the city should not only be 'in' the business of art but on the leading edge. For every dollar you invest it comes back at least doubled. Is it hard to make a decision when teachers, cops, firefighters, and city employees are breathing down your throat? Yes. But hard decisions that are sound and lead our city into the future, however unpopular in the short term, should be guide your decision on this issue. Not only is our rich cultural heritage at stake but literally the quality of life of every member of not only the city but those who live with-in fifty miles of city hall. Be brave. Increase the amount of money you give to the arts, at the very least do not cut any more."

Well said.

Face-to-face Gathering of Petition Signatures
If you haven't already, please read Karen's post "the client, the bank teller, the allergy clinic nurse, the copy shop guy and other consequential strangers who've been touched by the arts".  And then download the hardcopy petitions to gather signatures at your next event...or contact Karen Falkenstrom or Denise Uyehara to volunteer to gather signatures at upcoming arts events.  (Just like on Facebook,  you can send them a message via the TPACAAN network.  Click on a photo next to a blog post, which takes you to the individual's page; on the left, click "send a message".  Or you can just post a message on their wall.)

And while you're on the site, check out what network members have posted in the Forum.

Use the network ... it's your social network for arts advocacy

If you haven't taken the opportunity,  I encourage you to explore the site,  "friend" other people, start a discussion thread, or start your own group within the network.  Beyond the current "Save Public Funding for the Arts" campaign,  we are hoping to create a strong network for ongoing arts advocacy.  This summer,  we'll be asking for everyone's input on advocacy goals and issues to tackle.

Did you know ... that as people you invite join the network, they automatically become your friends.  You can go to your "My Page" and invite more.

And a couple of friendly reminders:
1.  Please keep items that you post to the site (including photos and videos) related to arts advocacy (not just artmaking in general).   The network includes many wonderful, creative artists--but it's not the place to promote or display your work. (And unlike Facebook, we have limited storage space on our site, so we especially need to keep photos and video to those related to the topic.)
2.  Just like on other social networking sites,  you need to  set your privacy and other settings  for your account on  "My Page", so that you control who can see your information and posts.
