ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Playwright, screenwriter and professor Paula Vogel has headed Brown’s Playwriting Workshop since 1985. The Workshop is a two year MFA program with playwrights from all over the country participating in readings, cabarets and a festival of new plays produced in repertory each year. THE BALTIMORE WALTZ was premiered at New York’s Circle Repertory Company, directed by Anne Bogart. It garnered the OBIE for Best Play, 1992 and was awarded the AT&T New Play Award, as well as the Joseph Calloway Award. Subsequent productions include Center Stage in Baltimore, Alley Theatre in Houston, Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Portland Stage Company, Oregon Shakespeare Festival and The Magic Theatre in San Francisco. AND BABY MAKES SEVEN was produced by New York’s Circle Repertory Company in spring of 1993, directed by Calvin Skaggs. AND BABY MAKES SEVEN and THE OLDEST PROFESSION have been presented at the Los Angeles Theater Center, Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska, the Hudson Guild Theatre in New York, the Boston Shakespeare Company, Theatre Rhinoceros in San Francisco, the Theatre Project Company in St. Louis, Company One and at other theatres in the U.S. and Canada. THE OLDEST PROFESSION, her screenplay, is currently optioned and she has written for television. DESDEMONA was done at the Bay Street Theater Festival, directed by Gloria Muzio, with Cherry Jones, J. Smith-Cameron and Fran Brill in summer 1993. This production was subsequently produced at Circle Repertory Company in November 1993. HOT’N THROBBING will be produced by Robert Brustein and the American Repertory Theater in April 1994, directed by Anne Bogart. Ms. Vogel has also written HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, a play about female sexuality and the American car and TRAVELS WITHOUT CHARLEY, a novel. Thrice a MacDowell Colony Fellow, Paula Vogel has also attended the Yaddo Colony and was the 1991-92 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Playwriting Fellowship (her second NEA award). Among her most recent awards are a 1992 summer residence at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy, the 1992-93 McKnight Fellow at the Playwrights Center and a Bunting Fellowship from Radcliffe College. She was also the 1992 recipient of the Rhode Island Governor’s Arts Awards. Paula Vogel has been a participant in the Warner Brothers Television Workshop in 1991 and has taught playwriting at Cornell University, the University of Alaska, The Writer’s Voice in New York and Trinity Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island. She has been an artist in residence in June 1991 at Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, and has directed plays and participated in workshops and panels at theaters and universities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Paula Vogel is a company member of Circle Repertory Company. Her work has been published in THE WAY WE LIVE NOW, an anthology published by TCG, THE BEST PLAYS BY WOMEN 1992 and by Dramatists Play Service, Fireside Theatre and American Theatre Magazine.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
Amanda Gremel - Teenage Greek Chorus - is Live Theatre Workshop’s Technical Director and Co-Coordinator of ATT, LTW’s family series. She has previously appeared on the mainstage in TAKING STEPS, DESIGN FOR MURDER and INSPECTING CAROL. She has worked extensively with Etcetera (with whom she is currently performing in THE BOOK OF LIZ), appearing in KIMBERLY AKIMBO (Pattie), ROBOTS VS. FAKE ROBOTS (Dancer), MR. MARMALADE (The Sunflower), WHITE PEOPLE (Mara Lynn), THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (Janet), THE PENIS MONOLOGUES (Ensemble) and DOG SEES GOD (CB’s Sister).
Rhonda Hallquist - Female Greek Chorus - has been directing and acting in local theatre productions for many years now. She has worked with Tucson Art Theater (VALENTINE’S DAY, WAITING FOR LEFTY, THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE), and One in Ten Theatre (A LATE SNOW, STREET THEATRE, MOVIE QUEENS). An original member of Bloodhut Productions, she spent 10 years creating and performing OUR OWN BODIES: STORIES FROM THE BLOODHUT, I KNOW AN OLD WOMAN and ONLY SKIN DEEP, among others. Recent local performances include Beth (DINNER WITH FRIENDS), Casey (ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS), Lane (THE CLEAN HOUSE -- 2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy), Betty (WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY), Suzanne (DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER) and Maureen (THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE).
David Alexander Johnston - Male Greek Chorus - David Alexander Johnston is happy to be back at LTW in HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE. He has recently been seen on stage with The Invisible Theatre in 2 ACROSS, AN EMPTY PLATE AT THE CAFE DU GRAND BOEUF, LEAVING IOWA and DON’T TALK TO THE ACTORS. He has performed with Arizona Theatre Company in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE FANTASTICKS and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and in a variety of roles in MY FAIR LADY. He performed with Arizona Opera in THREEPENNY OPERA, BARBER OF SEVILLE, CARMEN, and GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST. His other professional theatre credits include major roles in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, BIG RIVER, I DO! I DO!, THE ODD COUPLE and THE FOREIGNER. His television and movie credits include ‘After Armageddon,’ ‘Day of Redemption,’ ‘Spin,’ ‘The Unflyable Plane,’ for BBC, ‘Fast Getaway II,’ ‘Tank Girl’ and several regional and national commercials and industrial films. Local Tucson audiences may recognize David from his roles as The Actor in WOMAN IN BLACK, The Old Man in PRELUDE TO A KISS, Marvin in FALSETTOLAND, Buzz in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and PT Barnum in BARNUM.
Kristi Loera - Production Stage Manager - is Live Theatre Workshop’s Executive Director. Kristi has been a part of theatre in Tucson for 17 years and proudly works both on stage and behind the scenes for the mainstage at LTW as well as with Etcetera (the late-night arm) and All Together Theatre (the children’s theatre). Kristi most recently served as PSM for the mainstage productions of TRYING, THE DINNER PARTY, CLOUD 9 and MOON OVER BUFFALO and was last seen performing as Jocelyn Dunbar in David Sedaris’ SEASON’S GREETINGS! (2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nomination for Best Actress in a comedy).
Holli Thenhaus - Li’l Bit - is a graduate of the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts. She is elated to be performing in her eleventh season on the Mainstage at Live Theatre Workshop. Notable roles at LTW include Carnelle (THE MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST), Lucille/Veda (DEARLY DEPARTED), Lizzie (THE RAINMAKER), Fifi (THE BIG FUNK), Sylvia (SYLVIA), Shelby (STEEL MAGNOLIAS), Sunny (THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO), Maggie (DANCING AT LUGHNASA), Rosalind (MOON OVER BUFFALO), Bella (LOST IN YONKERS) and Pfeni (THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG). Holli’s turns in FUNNY MONEY and DANCING AT LUGHNASA earned her Arizona Daily Star MAC Award nominations for Best Actress, she won the prize for her performance as the title role in SYLVIA.
Sabian Trout - Direction - is thoroughly enjoying her sixth season as LTW’s Artistic Director. Previous LTW directing credits include TRYING, THE DINNER PARTY, THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, THE GIN GAME, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, LOST IN YONKERS, FUNNY MONEY, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, BELL BOOK AND CANDLE, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, BROADWAY BOUND and BABY WITH THE BATHWATER. Professional credits include productions at the Stratford Festival of Canada, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Actors Theatre of Phoenix, The Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis, Austin’s State Theatre, LA Theatre Works and Arizona Theatre Company. Other Tucson directing credits include LOVE LETTERS, EXTREMITIES, THE TALE OF THE ALLERGIST’S WIFE and ON THE VERGE. Some favorite directing projects include SPIKE HEELS, BEIRUT and KORCZAK AND THE CHILDREN. Sabian earned her MFA in Directing from the University of Texas in 1995.
Keith Wick - Peck - is happy to once again appear in another Live Theatre Workshop Mainstage production. Previous LTW acting credits include DANCING AT LUGHNASA, SPIDER’S WEB, FUNNY MONEY, LOST IN YONKERS, A TUNA CHRISTMAS, WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER (2010 Arizona Daily Star MAC Award Winner -- Best Actor in a Comedy) and THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG. Keith has also appeared in several All Together Theatre productions at LTW. He is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Some of his favorite roles include Fluellen in HENRY V, Second Man in AND THEY DANCE REAL SLOW IN JACKSON, Clive Champion-Cheney in THE CIRCLE and Nathan Detroit in GUYS AND DOLLS. Keith is a recipient of an AriZoni award for his portrayal of Dromio of Syracuse in the Southwest Shakespeare Production of A COMEDY OF ERRORS.
