UA Studio Series Reimagines Anton Chekhov’s Classic Three Sisters

Through the Artistic Vision of UA Graduate Students

Directed by John Muszynski

Tucson, AZ - Chekhov’s classic portrait of three sisters – Olga, Masha, and Irina – tells the story of love and loss.  MFA Generative Dramaturgy students, Fly Steffens and Anna Jennings, team up to create this fresh adaptation for the Studio Series.

Fly Steffen’s new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters titled, Insignificance is sickening and love means nothing at all; all it is is the strength to keep going on no matter what happens, explores the radical possibility of choice.  Characters driven by the strength of family, power of love and the ever-present hope for a better life are set in a world that is falling apart around them.  They face their individual addictions, anxieties, depression, fracturing relationships, and inability to change both symbolically and literally.  It is through love, hope and our personal choices that we are fated to exist in our realities.

“Elements of Chekhov’s Three Sisters remain visible in Insignificance is sickening and love means nothing at all; all it is is the strength to keep going on no matter what happens,” explained Dramaturg Anna Jennings.  “Steffens’ voice strikes a remarkable harmony with Chekhov’s, illustrating the human capacity for love and destruction through haunting images and poetic language.”

This new production continues the tradition of the Studio Series of pushing the boundaries of creativity, imagination and unpredictability.  Director John Muszynski is tasked with bringing this creative endeavor to the stage and excited to be a part of the process.  “I am always thrilled to be able to work on a brand new piece. There is so much value for student actors, designers and technicians to experience the challenges of new theatre with the playwright in the room. It is art in the making where we as artists share in its creation and eventual performance. This excitement of new work is transferred to our audiences in a shared experience.”  (This production contains mature subject matter and is not meant for children.)
