Ballet Tucson's Winter Concert 2020 is a celebration of American song and dance.
Made in America is presented in partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival.
Ballet Tucson has been a festival partner since its inception. Founding Artistic Director Mary Beth Cabana has selected a distinctive program of three entertaining works that fit perfectly with this year's festival theme of American song.

Opening the program is the breathtaking masterpiece Serenade, created in 1934 by the immortal genius George Balanchine. Serenade is the first ballet Mr. Balanchine created after immigrating to the United States and is considered a milestone in the history of dance. Regarded as the father of American ballet, Balanchine ignited a revolution with his distinctive modern approach to choreography. Serenade remains a signature work of the New York City Ballet and is performed by major ballet companies worldwide.  Ballet Tucson is honored to be granted permission by the George Balanchine Trust to perform this important work.  Mary Beth Cabana holds a special place in her heart for Serenade having danced the principal role of Russian Girl in the ballet – "I am so thrilled to bring this ballet to our company.  It is not only a great piece for our audiences to see, but also an incredible ballet for our dancers to perform!"

Also on the program is the debut of Unsquare. Associate Artistic Director Chieko Imada continues her creative sojourn with this American jazz-inspired work. Classical ballet and jazz dance movement merge to create a unique stylistic fusion that captures the spirit of American musical innovation. Company Prima Ballerina Jenna Johnson stars in this premiere complete with original scenic effects by Ballet Tucson collaborator and renowned artist Lawrence W. Lee.

Live vocal and musical talents are put on full display with the premiere of Recollections, the featured highlight of the "Made in America" Winter Concert. As part of the 2020 Tucson Desert Song Festival, choreographer Mark Schneider creates a stunning and evocative new ballet with well-known and popular American songs. Recollections features cherished tunes including By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Bicycle Built for Two, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, and more. Songs come to life with nostalgia-inspired costumes and dance to create a rousing full company closer. Featured vocal guest artists Katherine Byrnes and Rob Wright perform with live period musical accompaniment.
