June PRIDE Lunada

Galería de la Raza and Borderlands Theater bring the 18 year literary series to a digital screen near you. Presented on the new moon of each month starting in June and running through December, the series kicks of with a PRIDE themed installment featuring legendary comic and solo performer from San Francisco, Marga Gomez and poet Jesús Valles from Austin, Texas.

Marga Gomez is the writer/performer of thirteen solo plays which have been presented nationally, Off-Broadway, internationally and at Borderlands, Tucson. Named by NBC as one of eleven "Out Latinos you should know," Gomez has acting credits that include Campo Santo's San Francisco production of "Translating Selena" (January 2020), "Sense8" (Netflix), and "Sphere" (Warner Brothers.)

Jesús I. Valles is a queer Mexican immigrant, educator, storyteller, and performer based in Austin, Texas, originally from Cd. Juarez, Mexico. Their work has been published in The Shade Journal, The Texas Review, and The New Republic (forthcoming). Jesús currently teaches social and emotional learning to high school students, focusing on those recently arrived to the U.S.

A historic collaboration presenting an evening of truth telling and testimonials during the dark side of the moon, the virtual Lunada promises an evening of medicine for the heart and spirit.

Interested in being part of the Lunada "open mic?" Send us a video of yourself reciting your original poetry (3 minutes max) and you could be part of an upcoming Lunada. Feel free to get creative with your background, make up, clothing... or just keep it clean and simple. We are looking to fill 30 open mic slots (5 per event) for the entire series.

Submission Tips:

1.  Good lighting and audio goes a long way.

2.  Keep in mind Lunadas are a community ritual for soul healing through spoken word.
