Renowned sculptor/mask maker Zarco Guerrero returns telling poignant, culturally and temporally relevant stories through characters based on real people who we all can find familiarity and comfort in. Characters like "Vato Poeta," "El Narizon," "La Comadre," and "The Smoker" address real topics that kids are faced with today like bullying and self-love, violence, and the pandemic. Join us for Parts 2 and 3 in the Mask Alive! Series where Zarco takes us inside his studio/gallery to see how his masks are made and meet new characters each performance!

Performance 1 in the Masks Alive! Series can be streamed on Borderland's YouTube Channel

We are thrilled to introduce Veronica Conran as the new host for the series. Veronica hails from Nogales, Arizona and is our new Digital Content Producer at Borderlands Theater.

After the overwhelming success of our first virtual Lunada in April, the collaborative team of Galería de la Raza and Borderlands Theater brings the 18 year literary series to a digital screen near you for seven monthly installments starting in June. A historic collaboration presenting an evening of truth telling and testimonials during the dark side of the moon, the virtual Lunada promises an evening of medicine for the heart and spirit.

Curated by a national advisory committee of poets including Amalia Ortiz (San Antonio), Marc David Pinate (Tucson), Yosimar Reyes (Los Angeles) and Sandra Garcia Rivera (NYC), the Virtual Lunada will present two featured poets on the new moon of each month, along with several "open mic" poets from around the country. Featured poet line up will be announced soon!

Call for Poetry Videos

Interested in being part of the Lunada "open mic?" Send us a video of yourself reciting your original poetry (3 minutes max) and you could be part of an upcoming Lunada. Feel free to get creative with your background, make up, clothing... or just keep it clean and simple. We are looking to fill 35 open mic slots (5 per event) for the entire series.

Submission Tips:

1.  Good lighting and audio goes a long way.

2.  Keep in mind Lunadas are a community ritual for soul healing through poetry.

3.  June is PRIDE month. Poems around this theme will have special consideration for the June Lunada.

Send a link (YouTube, Vimeo) or your video file to veronica@borderlandstheater.org by June 12 to be considered for the summer and fall Lunada dates.
