After becoming friends with some truly remarkable forest creatures, (and outrageously costumed) she finds that her true duty as a princess is to teach her kingdom to "go green" and respect the forest and animals within.

Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities presents, "El Capitán Colorado (The Royal O'Conor)"

Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities, with help from In Concert! Tucson, is proud to announce a theatrical production written and produced in Ireland about the founding of Tucson.

El Capitán Colorado
(The Royal O’Conor)

Written and produced in Ireland by Irish playwright Caroilin Callery this play depicts the life of a young Irishman who leaves his home in Ireland at age 16 never to return, destined to die without family, at age 44 in faraway Mexico. In the interim he became one of the most accomplished and distinguished military leaders in New Spain. That individual was Don Hugo O’Conor, Knight of the Order of Calatrava, Colonel of Infantry in his Majesty’s armies and Commandant Inspector of the frontier posts of northern New Spain. His most lasting legacy: locating a new Presidio at San Augustin del Tucson on August 20, 1775. Today, the date is considered Tucson’s birthday and O’Conor its illustrious founder.

Not surprisingly the O’Conor story intertwines with the story of the Spanish Colonial period in what is today southern Arizona. It interlaces with the period’s history of missionaries, conquistadors, and Native tribes, in an interesting intercultural smelting pot that has grown into the thriving city of Tucson. This is not a show for a brief go around; instead, it is a piece of literature on a most interesting character, for the historical canon of both Tucson and Ireland.

A cast of actors from Ireland will be performing.

With opening by the Hugh O'Conor Memorial Pipe Band, Diamond Jim Hewitt and Cobblestone (Dave Firestine, Sharon Goldwasser and Jamie O'Brien.)

World Premiere performance!: Friday, February 29, 7:00 pm Berger Performing Arts Center, $25.

Buy Tickets

http://www.tix.com/Event.asp?Event=122623

Tickets are also available, with no service fee, at: Celtic Corner 222 E. Congress, and at O'Shaughnessey's 220 N Camino Principal.

There are two other shows of the play (without musical opening): Saturday, March 1, 7:00pm St. Pius X Arizona Hall: 1800 N. Pio Decimo, 85715. and Sunday, March 2, 3:00 pm Sts. Peter and Paul Grammar Hall: 1846 E. Lee St.. Those tickets are available at the churches and not on this site.

Its 2008 Summer Season

Prelude to a Kiss, by Craig Lucas  Directed by Terry Erbe
06/19/08 - 07/20/08

Peter and Rita follow their whirlwind courtship with a storybook wedding. After a mysterious elderly man appears and kisses the bride at the wedding, the two lovers are sent on a magical journey that they will never forget. As they struggle to come to terms with their relationship, their love is put to the test by wondrous forces.

I DO, I DO Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones, Music by Harvey Schmidt Directed by Michael Martinez
07/24/08 - 8/24/08

This funny, tuneful musical about the joy and tribulations of marriage was originally produced on Broadway starting Mary Martin and Robert Preston, who won a Tony Award for his performance. Remounted in 1996 with updated lyrics and music, I DO! I DO! has always been a adored - New York Magazine stated "The score is a delight from top to bottom,” and the Associated Press describes it as “Nothing but sheer pleasure. Yes, yes, pleasure all the way. A Dazzler. Beguiling.”

Educating Rita by Willy Russell, Directed by Paul Schumacher
8/28/08 - 9/28/08

Frank is a tutor of English in his fifties whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright 26 year-old hairdresser who is hungry for education. Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, ultimately giving Frank a new sense of self and Rita the knowledge she so craves. The play became a hit film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters.
