SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

Directed by Kevin Johnson

Music Direction by David Craig

Digital Projection Designs by John MacDonald

Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning musical SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE will be presented June 19th - 29th for six performances only. Arizona Onstage Productions, a multi-award winning music theater company (BARK!, ASSASSINS, A NEW BRAIN, ELEGIES), brings the story of George Seurat and his artistic vision as he creates the painting, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, his most famous work, that changes lives, loves, and introduces the art world to "Neo-Impressionism."

Currently on Broadway at the Roundabout Theater, SUNDAY won raves for its recent London production.

Please a note to auditioners - this score is complicated, sophisticated, warm, funny and heart-wrenching, with much atonal harmony.  Those who want to audition should be familiar with Sondheim, should be able to sight read notes, or be very savvy with difficult harmonies and abnormal time signatures in the score.

Unlike the original Tony-winning production, starring Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin, this staging is more a chamber piece - never missing any emotion or theatrical effects.  We see his canvas behind him as he sketches.

All characters except George are open...  George will be played by Kit Runge.  This is a show where it is fine to sing from the score for auditions...

Dot/Marie - George's headstrong mistress - also George's elderly, wheelchair-bound grandmother - MEZZO SOPRANO, HIGH LEVEL ACTRESS.

Old Lady/Blair Daniels - A cranky fixture in the park/An art critic - MEZZO SOPRANO comic

Nurse/Harriet Pawling/Mrs. - The Old lady's attendant/A patron of the arts

Jules/Bob Greenberg - A rival artist/museum director

Yvonne/Naomi Eisen - Jules' pampered wife/a sardonic composer

A Boatman/Charles Redmond - A surly blue collar laborer/a visiting Texas curator - BARITONE

Celeste #1/A waitress - a young shop girl/a caterer at the opening

Celeste #2/Elaine - another shop girl/George's ex-wife

Louise - Jules and Yvonne's spoiled little girl

Franz/Dennis - Jules' coachman/a frazzled techie - BARITONE OR TENOR

Soldier/Alex - French Military man/jealous artist - BARITONE

And other roles...  This is a big cast!
