OUR COMMUNITY, OUR STORIES
Stories that Soar! at Mission Manor Elementary
in the Sunnyside School District
On Friday, December 5, 2008 at 9:00am at Mission Manor Elementary, 600 W Santa Rosa, the Stories that Soar! professional acting troupe will return to the Sunnyside School District to celebrate the stories written by students of Mission Manor by bringing the children’s words and ideas to life through the magic of theatre. Last year was the first time Stories that Soar! partnered with Mission Manor and the results exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Through this program all children, regardless of their academic level, are invited to “feed” the Magic Box™ their stories. Out of the 25 recognized authors last year, four were English as a Second Language learners, three were in special needs classes and one was hearing impaired. Stories that Soar! promotes the power of literacy by focusing on ideas rather than conventions, thus empowering children to take chances with their writing while building confidence that their ideas are worth sharing. This year Chairman Richard Elias, the Pima County Supervisor representing District 5 will attend the production to show his support for literacy and the arts.
To bring the program to their students, schools provide a host fee and additional funding from sources such as the PTA and sponsors. STS! is able to supplement production costs with support from granting organizations, foundations, businesses and private donors. Major donors for the 2008-09 season include Arizona Commission on the Arts, Tucson Pima Arts Council, Community Foundation of Southern AZ, The Stocker Foundation and Target Foundation.
Don’t miss another illustrious performance by Stories that Soar! on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 9:00am at Mission Manor Elementary.
