ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES AN ENCHANTED 2008-2009 SEASON

Packages now on sale for a season to celebrate

Highlights include world premiere comedy by Jane Martin, return of Hershey Felder in his new show about Beethoven, and a 40th Anniversary production of the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical

Celebrating its 42nd season, Arizona Theatre Company will dazzle audiences with an enchanted season packed with powerful stories, laugh-out-loud comedies, recent Broadway hits, world premieres, and an iconic American rock musical. The 2008-2009 season includes Jane Martin’s hilarious world premiere comedy SOMEBODY/NOBODY about fame in the age of the paparazzi and the return of the acclaimed Hershey Felder with his new show BEETHOVEN, AS I KNEW HIM. ATC visits the sunny Italian countryside in the heartwarming ENCHANTED APRIL, as well as the South Side of 1950s Chicago with a 50th Anniversary production of Lorraine Hansberry’s A RAISIN IN THE SUN, which continues the AMERICA PLAYS! Celebrating Great American Stories initiative. Get up close and personal in an intimate evening with advice columnist Ann Landers in THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS by David Rambo, while flower-power and sunshine fill the theatre with the revolutionary 1968 rock musical HAIR in a 40th Anniversary production.

“The 2008-2009 season feels like an especially hopeful journey, which seems appropriate to challenging times,” said Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein in announcing the season. “Hope, dreams, renewal and community fill these plays, whether in the powerful drama of A RAISIN IN THE SUN, the hilarious sting of SOMEBODY/NOBODY, or the tribal celebration of HAIR. Wildly divergent in style and diverse in theme, each of these plays has juicy energy and theatricality. Last season was one of ATC’s most successful both artistically and institutionally. Next season is our very best effort to build on that momentum.”

The season opens joyously with ENCHANTED APRIL by Matthew Barber from the novel by Elizabeth von Armin. “To those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine. Small castle on the Mediterranean, Northern Italy, to be let for the month of April.”  That simple newspaper notice seduces a quartet of British women to rent a villa for one blissful spring in 1922, where their lives of ordered regularity blossom into glorious disarray.  Seduced by cinnamon breezes, they learn to let their hair, and their guards, down and awaken to the simple joys of friendship, love and marriage. A Tony-nominated Broadway hit based on the best-selling novel, ENCHANTED APRIL is a heartwarming, verdant comedy about the romantic rediscovery of life's enchantments.  “A lush, thoroughly refreshing theatrical holiday. A magical triumph!” wrote the Los Angeles Times. Directed by Timothy Near, ENCHANTED APRIL runs from September 13 through October 4 in Tucson and October 9 through October 26 in Phoenix.

The season continues with the Arizona premiere of David Rambo’s popular THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS. “Dear Ann Landers…” began every letter. For decades she allowed lovelorn teens, confused couples and everyone else in need of help to turn to her for advice. No topic was off-limits from love to death to how to properly hang a roll of toilet paper. Now, late on a 1975 night in Ann Landers’ Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of dilemma: her own. Based on real events and actual letters, spend an intimate evening with the queen of advice as she shares secrets, personal revelations and some juicy tidbits from her multitude of readers.  “A smile-inducing, tear duct-activating reunion with a woman who might have been a stranger but seemed like family…engaging from beginning to end” - LA Times. Directed by ATC Associate Artistic Director Samantha K. Wyer, THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS runs from October 18 through November 8 in Tucson and November 13 through November 30 in Phoenix.

Let the Sunshine In… I Got Life…I Believe in Love… Good Morning Starshine…It’s the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, the year is 1968, and a tribe of hippies in New York’s Central Park is letting down their gleaming, streaming, long beautiful hair – and a revolutionary musical that changes everything opens on Broadway and conquers the world.  HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical by Gerome Ragni and James Rado with music by Galt MacDermott gave a generation of young Americans a way to express themselves through music that gloriously combined rock-and-roll with Broadway craft.  If you experienced it then, you’ll want to groove to it again. If you were too young the first time around, come discover what the fuss was all about as ATC stages a glorious new production of HAIR to celebrate the production's 40th Anniversary. Directed by ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein with musical direction by Christopher McGovern and choreography by Patti Wilcox, HAIR runs from November 29 through December 20 in Tucson and December 31 through January 18, 2009 in Phoenix. HAIR contains mature language and nudity.

A gripping and explosive tale of one family living and learning together on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s, A RAISIN IN THE SUN was the first authentic voice of an African American playwright to hit the Broadway stage. In this award-winning drama, the Younger family searches for a way to grab their piece of the dream, even in the face of prejudice and discrimination. Since the play’s premiere exactly 50 years ago, Lorraine Hansberry’s towering masterpiece has moved audiences and broken down barriers wherever it has played. A RAISIN IN THE SUN is the second of ATC’s AMERICA PLAYS! Celebrating Great American Stories initiative following the tremendous success of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD this spring. This ambitious multi-year series of American stories will include special public forums, readings, education programs and state-wide community-based free events. It will be directed by Lou Bellamy, Artistic Director of Penumbra Theatre and director of ATC's acclaimed production of August Wilson’s JITNEY in 2006. Running from January 10 through January 31, 2009 in Tucson and February 5 through February 22, 2009 in Phoenix, A RAISIN IN THE SUN is a co-production with the Cleveland Playhouse and Penumbra Theatre at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

Sheena is a somebody who wants to be a nobody. Loli is a nobody desperate to be a somebody. In this hilarious world premiere comedy about Hollywood, fame and the TMZ, renowned playwright Jane Martin takes dead aim at our culture of celebrity with SOMEBODY/NOBODY. So you think you want to be famous? So did teen idol and “shark-movie” star Sheena Keener, the darling of the press, the obsession of the paparazzi, and the Goddess of the E! Channel. But now she can’t stand to be looked at anymore and her Godzilla of an agent is on the warpath. When Sheena ends up on the doorstep of naïve newcomer Loli, a recent arrival from Flatt, Kansas, it’s a wild ride on the road to fame. Directed by ATC favorite Jon Jory, returning for his fifth time to ATC, SOMEBODY/NOBODY is a laugh-out-loud look at modern life and our unending quest for fifteen minutes of fame that runs in Tucson from March 7, 2009 through March 28, 2009 and in Phoenix from April 2, 2009 through April 19, 2009.

We embraced him last season as the inimitable New Yorker George Gershwin and the elegant and mystical Fryderyk Chopin. Every one of his ATC performances was greeted with standing ovations and calls for encores. Now, Hershey Felder completes his musical trilogy known as ‘The Composer Sonata’ with his brand new production, BEETHOVEN, AS I KNEW HIM. Based on a true story, the headstrong German genius Ludwig van Beethoven is brought stirringly to life through the eyes of his last surviving friend as well as through performances of some of the most eternally powerful musical masterpieces ever composed. Hershey Felder’s ATC performances have been heralded as “Magic…Sublime!” by the Arizona Daily Star, and “A true passion powers his portrayal…Delightful!” by The Arizona Republic. Directed by Joel Zwick, BEETHOVEN, AS I KNEW HIM runs in Tucson from April 8, 2009 through April 27, 2009 and in Phoenix from May 7, 2009 through May 24, 2009.

Complementing our mainstage season and as a special treat for Arizona audiences, Arizona Theatre Company is presenting for one week only in Phoenix and Tucson the Guthrie Theater and The Acting Company production of William Shakespeare’s KING HENRY V.  In this towering classic, Henry V, young, restless and ambitious, inherits a troubled crown and seeks to secure his position at home by launching a hasty invasion of France. This Shakespearean epic balances the thrilling heroics of battle with the painful and complex reactions of men who are sometimes unsure of the justice of their cause.  KING HENRY V is a rousing, fascinating story about the power of courage and the price of glory. Directed by Davis McCallum, HENRY V plays a limited run in Phoenix from March 26, 2009 through March 29, 2009 and in Tucson from April 2, 2009 through April 5, 2009. Tickets for this strictly limited engagement are on sale now to renewing and new subscribers.

Season packages for the 2008-2009 season are on sale now. All Tucson performances take place at the Temple of Music and Art (330 S. Scott Avenue); call the Box Office at (520) 622-2823. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams

June 15-29 & September 3-14, 2008

Marroney Theatre

In this acclaimed masterpiece by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams, family tensions run high and are as thick as a humid southern summer night.  While one brother and his scheming wife are vying for his dying father’s inheritance, the other seeks escape in a bottle as he avoids dealing with his turbulent marriage to Maggie “The Cat,” in a place where the “walls have ears.”  Explosive and poignant, this contemporary drama, made famous by the 1958 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, examines the dysfunctional Southern family’s rivalries, avarice and secrets.  Adult language and themes.

This production is offered through the generous support of the 2008 Summer Arts Festival, a program of the Office of Summer and Winter Session.

Production Sponsor: Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast

Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare

October 12 — November 2, 2008

Tornabene Theatre

A seemingly endless summer abounds in this classic romantic comedy with a contemporary twist, as a young King and his three lords vow to reject temptation and pursue a scholarly and celibate existence for three years.  They are quickly brought back to reality when a Princess and her three ladies arrive in the kingdom, proving that matters of the heart prevail over the mind.  But when a crisis occurs and the lovers are forced apart with inevitable autumn on the horizon, will they find that good things are worth the wait?

Production Sponsor: Green Fields Country Day School

Company, book by George Furth; music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

November 9 — December 7, 2008

Marroney Theatre

Robert, a 35-year-old single New Yorker, is relatively content with his life and considers his five married couple friends all the “Company” he needs.  His friends disagree, upholding wedded bliss while displaying each of their dysfunctional relationships.  Robert is convinced that “Someone Is Waiting,” but amid a reluctance to commit to one of three incompatible girlfriends, he wonders if he will ever find the right woman that makes it worth “Being Alive” in this Tony Award-winning musical.  Adult language and themes.

Production Sponsor: Barbara Molotsky

Medea by Euripides

February 8 — March 1, 2009

Tornabene Theatre

This epic Greek tragedy is just as familiar today as it was when originally written.  In a political move, Jason leaves his wife and children to marry a princess and align his fortunes with the throne.  Betrayed and bereft, Medea enters into a ruthless downward spiral of depravity and madness, determined to achieve her revenge, no matter what the cost.  Violence and adult themes.

From the creative mind behind “Lend Me a Tenor,” comes a zany comedy complete with money, motivation and mistaken identities.  When a pair of broke Shakespearean actors discover a dying millionaire who wants to leave her estate to her long-lost relatives, they decide to pass themselves off as the heirs, only to find that the nephews are really nieces.  With some creative costuming, the actors transform themselves, trying to fool the family, but things prove difficult when they become fools in love and risk forfeiting their façade.  Mature themes.

Tornabene Theatre

Charming con man Harold Hill has made a living promising to teach children how to play in a band, collecting payment first then skipping town before he is discovered.  Things seem no different in River City, Iowa, until he falls for the town librarian, who rightly suspects his silver-tongued gift is more of a curse.  Filled with familiar tunes, such as “Seventy-six Trombones,” “Trouble,” and “Till There Was You,” this delightful Tony Award-winning musical will have you humming all the way home.

Production Sponsors: Jane & Lee Kivel

Tucson: Arizona Onstage Productions needs digital animation and projection assistance

Digital file/animation needed for local theater company (Tucson)

Reply to: azonstage@yahoo.com
Date: 2008-05-28, 12:00AM MST

Arizona Onstage Productions, Tucson's award winning (and sorta broke) musical theater company, is seeking a dynamic computer artist who can jump head-first into creating projected works/scenic design for a production of Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - based on the works of artist George Seurat. We are the only company besides the current NYC Broadway company to get the rights to this show. It involves creating "a background that comes to life" via LCD video projection on the cyc at the back of the stage. There is not a lot of pay, however, there will be HUGE exposure to this production that runs June 19th - 29th. It needs to be more than a powerpoint but nothing totally decadent... Please respond, and I will talk detail. In the meantime, go to www.roundabouttheatre.org to get an idea - we don't want and can't go this full tech, but it gives you a suggestion...

Great people in the cast and crew...

LCD projection help needed for local theater production

Date: 2008-05-27, 11:59PM MST

Arizona Onstage Productions, Tucson's Award-winning live musical theater company (semi-broke, but still goin') looking for a specialist in digital projection for its upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim's Tony and Pulitzer prize-winning musical SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - playing seven shows, from June 19th - 29th, at The Pima West Black Box Theater. We need someone who can understand front digital projections that can fill a backdrop, yet not interfere with the actors on stage - it has to do with angles of the lcd projector as well as focus.
Honestly, I know NOTHING about this and am in quite a bind.
The show is based on artist Georges Seurat's pointillist masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte...

Please email with any questions. I am very tech stupid and need help with this very highly publicized show.... Questions like throw distance, back projection and such - I am honestly clueless - but I know what I want to see. I know that if we use rear projection, it has to have a very wide throw - and if we use front it has to be at a severe angle... HELP!!!

Thanks so very much.
