STORIES THAT SOAR! PRESENTS A FAMILY EVENT AT STEVIE ELLER THEATRE
Best of Stories That Soar! Showcases Student Authors from 10 Tucson Elementary Schools
Where can you find a hungry Magic Box, a talking cat, a fish who flips, singing pirates aboard a fiery ship, and an evil tomato bent on taking over the world, along with a host of other imaginative characters in surprising situations!? Only at the Best of Stories that Soar!, of course.
This Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre Stories that Soar! will present their 2008 "Best of Stories that Soar!" show, weaving together some of the most innovative pieces written by kindergarten through sixthgrade authors from ten local Tucson schools.
In their third year operating as a nonprofit, Stories that Soar! empowers children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas. The Stories that Soar! (STS!) theatre program invites elementary school students to voluntarily "feed" the hungry, talking Magic Box™ their stories, promising to give them back magic! The result is both fascinating and delightful, with stories ranging from introspective to completely outrageous. The STS! professional acting troupe selects about twentyfive stories from the hundreds submitted for artistic interpretation. After working collaboratively to transform the stories, using dance, acrobatics, music, comedy, drama and more, the adult performers return to the school to give the children their stories back as a culturally rich, multimedia live performance. We culminate each season with the Best of Stories that Soar!, a spectacular event publicly celebrating the amazing powers of children's imaginations, literacy and the performing arts.
During the 2007-2008 academic year, Stories that Soar! visited ten schools within the Tucson Unified, Flowing Wells, Sunnyside, and Vail School Districts, bringing to life the stories of over 300 children.
There will be two performances of the Best of Stories that Soar! on May 10, a matinee at 2:00 P.M. and an evening at 7:00 P.M. Both performances will be held at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre on the University of Arizona campus (across from McKale Center). All are welcome to a preshow reception which begins an hour before curtain time for each performance and includes free refreshments, balloons, face painting, raffles, and a silent auction. Some of the auction items include: hand-crafted artwork, a night at the theatre, a luxurious massage, and dinner for two.
This is a family-friendly community event for all ages. Tickets are currently on sale at Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Avenue, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkles Toy Store, 4811 E Grant Rd # 151, Tucson, AZ. For additional ticket information, please call 975-9970 or 891-6841.
