SHOW: THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

The 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE involves a fictional, geographically ambiguous middle school spelling bee in which six off-beat adolescents in the throes of puberty are overseen by grownups who had a hard time escaping childhood themselves. As they compete, the two teachers and “comfort counselor” try to deal with them. Along the way the students learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a “loser.” As part of the action, three or four audience members get to participate in the bee along with the six contestants.

The unlikeliest of heroes, a quirky but charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Directed and choreographed by Robert Russo, Jr.; Associate Director and Producer, Kevin Johnson; Music Director, Khris Dodge, Costumes by Shana Nunez. Featuring a cast of both newcomers and Tucson favorites, including Walter Belcher, Nicholas Gallardo, Jennifer Hijazi, Ellie Jepperson, Michelle Leon, Brian Levario, Steve McKee & Jacinda Rose Swinehart, and Daniel Tenney.

ABOUT THE AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION

Before every performance, four audience volunteers are recruited to participate on stage as guest spellers. Each new foursome guarantees a new set of hilarious and unexpected experiences. One night is just as unique as the one before it. The willing contestants are chosen through a careful vetting process utilizing preshow lobby interviews and audience questionnaires.

HISTORY OF THE SHOW:

The musical was based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original improvisational play created by Rebecca Feldman and performed by “The Farm”, a New-York-based improvisational comedy troupe. Sarah Saltzberg, Wendy Wasserstein’s (The Heidi Chronicles) weekend nanny, was in the original production, and Wasserstein recommended that Finn see the show. Finn brought Rachel Sheinkin on board, and they worked together with Feldman to transform "C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E" into a scripted full-length musical.  After a huge success off-Broadway, SPELLING BEE opened on Broadway to great reviews and Tony Awards, playing for 1,136 performances.
