No Admittance takes place in the winter and early spring of 1968 in Western Tennessee. While cosmopolitan Memphis tries to roll with the changes currently sweeping the country, the small town of Jackson, home of Lambuth College, still clings to the last stubborn remnants of Jim Crow. Against this backdrop, white Lambuth upperclassman Tom Nichols, privileged son of a Memphis lawyer, has become best friends with African American classmate Bill Bowen. Though collegiate high jinks (involving too much rural moonshine, a graveyard, and a pint-sized American flag) temporarily lands Tom in trouble with the law, his close friendship with Bill opens doors to a world Tom—and his parents—have never imagined. In the weeks and days leading up to Dr. King’s fateful final visit to Memphis, the two young men encounter the wisdom of a Woolworth’s lunch counter waitress, a savvy country attorney, and the unforgettable Sister Willie Mae Tygert. As the play deftly navigates the turbulent currents of Vietnam-era news reports, Tom and Bill face the scourge of racism, heed the call of social justice, and discover the true meaning of family.
