What happens when love, and sexual desire intertwine with profound differences in age, culture, class, and language? Rascon Banda’s play El Deseo/ Desire explores the theme through the relations between Susan, a middle-aged American college professor and Víctor, her young working-class Colombian lover. This emotionally charged work has had a very successful season (more than 100 shows) in Mexico and has toured to Paris, France, Madrid and Marseille.
Borderlands Theater presented the first bilingual version of the play in 2006 to sold out houses. The play was originally written in Spanish. The translation/ adaptation by Eva Tessler (also the director) is accessible to monolingual audiences and will underscore the importance of the differences in language between the characters Susan and Victor.
The cast includes well-known Tucson actress Carlisle Ellis and Mexican actor Victor Carpinteiro. Ellis has been seen often in Tucson stages. This is Carpinteiro’s second appearance in Tucson, but local audiences can sample his work from the many films (16 films) he has appeared in , such as “Gringo Viejo”, “Danzon”, “Once upon a Time in Mexico”, and “Collateral Damage.” Carpinteiro has a very active career as a stage actor and many of the productions where he has worked have toured nationally (Mexico) and internationally. Awards include AMCT Best New Actor (1987) and Jose Galvez Award for Best Supporting Actor. Deseo/ Desire is been directed by Eva Tessler (Arizona Daily Star nomination for Best Director 2006) whose credits also include the critically acclaimed play Living Out (Arizoan Daily Star Best Play of 2005),
Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda (Author), one of Mexico’s most prolific and widely produced playwrights, in 2003 alone, had four productions playing at the same time in Mexico City where he currently lives. He has received many national and international awards and honors for his plays and films including two Ariel’s (Mexico’s “Oscars)” for the film Dias Dificiles. Víctor is currently Executive Director of SOGEM, (The Association of Mexican Authors). Borderlands previously produced his trilingual play La Mujer Que Cayó del Cielo (2000, 2005), Sazón de Mujer (2003), and in 2004 the theater produced a bilingual reading of Hotel Juarez. He is a member of the advisory board of the Mexican Film Instutute, a member of the Consejo Nacional de Artes y Letras, and he has taught at the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the National University.
