Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre FINAL WEEKEND for Stones in His Pockets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beowulf Alley Announces FINAL WEEKEND for Stones in His Pockets

(Tucson, AZ--November 29, 2007)— There are only 4 performances left of STONES IN HIS POCKETS, by Marie Jones. Performances are Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30p and Sundays at 1:30p. Ticket prices range from $16-$19 with special discounts on the internet. Please go to www.beowulfalley.org or call (520) 882-0555.

Directed by Susan Arnold, Stones in his Pockets tells the tale of two local, down-on-their luck Irishmen, Jake Quinn (Matthew Copley) and Charlie Conlon (Jonathan Northover),  who along with others, have been cast as extras in a Hollywood movie being filmed in rural County Kerry, Ireland. Imagine the clash of ideals and the chaos that ensues when Hollywood divas, flamboyant press agents and bigwig Hollywood directors, searching for the perfect close up, begin trampling on the people who live in the village. The delight over free food and 40 quid a day for doing virtually nothing gradually turns to resentment and the mood threatens to derail the movie when a tragic event occurs.

Copley and Northover portray all of the 15 characters in the play. James Reel of the Tucson Weekly wrote, “Northover and Copley perform heroically, changing characters as quickly as they may swerve to left or right as they stride across the stage. And each character is quite distinct; once every figure has been introduced, you know instantly which character has now taken over an actor's body.”

Stones in His Pockets won the Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best Production in 1999, The London Evening Standard award in 2000, two Olivier Awards for Best New Comedy and Best Actor and was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2001, and has been produced all over the world in several languages.

Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre presents The Syringa Tree

From: theatre [mailto:theatre@beowulfalley.org]
Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 2:50 PM
Subject: Press Release - The Syringa Tree

                                                                                    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company presents The Syringa Tree

(Tucson, AZ--November 28, 2007)— Beowulf Alley Theatre Company is pleased to present “The Syringa Tree”, by  Pamela Gien, starring Belinda Torrey, directed by Roger Johnson with dialect coaching by Eva Wright. Special thanks to the Tin Shed Theater and the Patagonia Creative Arts Center. Ms. Torrey performs all twenty-four characters in this moving piece. The Syringa Tree is a personal memoir of a childhood spent in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the troubling years of apartheid. The play explores the loving relationship between two families, one white, one black, and the two children that are born into their household in the early 1960s. The narrator and central character is Elizabeth Grace, a white, privileged English girl, six years old when the play begins, and her black counterpart, Moliseng, who is born to Salamina, the Grace family maid. Moliseng is born “without papers” in a white district and it is illegal for her to live in the Grace household with her mother. If she is discovered, she will be forced to live with her grandparents in the township. The story develops around the tensions between whites and blacks, even those who love each other, and demonstrates how racial hatred leads inevitably to violence.

“Instantly engaging…a thoroughly persuasive transport to an exotic place and time.”

- New York Times

“A tour-de-force solo drama…It’s a love story, really, about the strong, lasting bond between a white girl and her black nanny in South Africa…emotionally powerful without being overtly political.”

-          The New Yorker

Tucson: Local city council member sponsors Stories that Soar! show

Subject: Press Release: Local city council member sponsors Stories that Soar! show

̢ۢ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ̢ۢ NOVEMBER 27, 2007 ̢ۢ

• MEDIA CONTACT: LISA GERNAK 520.891.6841 •Â

LOCAL CITY COUNCIL MEMBER SPONSORS STORIES THAT SOAR! SHOW

Stories that Soar! is coming to Robison Elementary with help from Nina Trasoff

At 9:30 a.m. on Friday, December 7, 2007 Stories that Soar! performs their fourth unique show of the season at Robison Elementary School located at 2745 E 18th Street in Tucson. Â  You never know what each individual Stories that Soar! show will feature since the school's students creative writing provides the content for the professional actors to bring to life. Robison is no different with a show full of silly monkeys, school raps, Spice Girls super-heroes and a headless cow!

In their third year operating under the non-profit SharMoore Children's Productions, Stories that Soar! empowers children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas. The Stories that Soar! (STS) theatre program invites elementary school students to voluntarily "feed" the hungry, talking Magic Boxâ„¢ their stories, promising to give them back magic! The result is both fascinating and delightful when the STS professional acting troupe selects approximately twenty stories from the hundreds submitted to be collaboratively transformed. Â  Using dance, acrobatics, music, comedy, drama and more, the adult performers return to the school to give the children their stories back as a culturally rich, multi-media live performance.

Approximately a month ago, the students of Robison Elementary had the pleasure of "feeding" the "hungry" Magic Boxâ„¢ their original stories and on the morning of December 7, a selection of those stories, from honest to outrageous, will be brought to life!

Most people do not consider is how each of these astonishing shows are funded. Â  Each of the ten local elementary schools that Stories that Soar! will serve this season rely on diverse funding sources to secure the $4,000 each show takes to produce. Â  Last year, local Ward 6 City Council member Nina Trasoff recognized the benefits of Stories that Soar! and provided matching grants for two Ward 6 schools. After last year's great response, she is helping yet again by targeting three schools: Robison, J.B. Wright and Sam Hughes.

Come see how the magic of Stories that Soar! brings the words of Robison students to life next Friday, December 7 at Robison Elementary at 9:30 a.m.  Visitors are welcome and encouraged to come see this show as long as they check in at the office.

Tucson: Casting call, lead female role

Reply to: comedy@formulafilms.com
Date: 2007-11-20, 7:10PM MST

Will be shooting a feature film in January and February 2008 in and around Tucson.
One leading role is for a very hot babe who was a stripper but has now changed her life. She still wears hot sexy outfits but doesn't do her past life any more. Mid-20's to early thirties. Prefer experienced actress with some chops but will consider exceptional newbie with great skill set. There is no nudity for this role. Just a lot of sizzle. Currently this is an unpaid gig but may evolve into a paid gig and when the film sells, producer will upgrade to SAG production. May have one or more Hollywood known actors with one on board pending finances. Several well-known Tucson actors on board and others in the wings. This is a hysterical, laugh a minute comedy that will be a HUGE hit on the festival circuit. If interested, please shoot us a filmography and current head shot. Other roles advertised later.

The upbeat and inspiring music has a positive message about serving the community and making a difference in the world.

WHO: Santa Cruz choir students range from 4th through 7th grade. They have practiced twice a week for two hours at a time since early October learning choreography and staging. They began learning the music in September. For most of the students, this is their first stage production.  A couple students have been involved with other choirs and music groups such as the Tucson Girls Chorus, mariachi groups and folclorico groups.

WHEN: Opening night is Thursday at 7PM in the Carmelite hall behind Santa Cruz Church at 1201 S. 6th Ave. (On the South West corner of 22ed and 6th Ave)

Performances also take place on Saturday at 7PM and Sunday at 3PM.

Tickets are $3 for adults, $1 for Santa Cruz students and children 12 & under.

WHY: The ticket sales will be used to purchase a new curtain for the stage in the cafeteria, which currently has none.
