KING HENRY V MARCHES INTO ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY
ATC presents limited engagement of Guthrie Theater/The Acting Company production
Arizona Theatre Company is proud to present The Acting Company/Guthrie Theater production of William Shakespeare’s KING HENRY V. Considered by many to Shakespeare’s greatest and most exciting history play, it tells the story of one of England’s most inspiring monarchs and his triumphs in war, politics and love. A touring co-production of two of America’s Tony Award-winning theatre companies, KING HENRY V plays in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center for five performances only from March 26 though March 29. KING HENRY V continues its run in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art for an additional five performances from April 2 through April 5. Arizona Theatre Company’s Season Underwriters are I. Michael and Beth Kasser and the production sponsor of KING HENRY V is Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
Young, restless and ambitious, Henry V inherits a troubled crown and seeks to secure his position at home by launching a hasty invasion of France. The charismatic warrior King’s aggressive pursuit of the French crown earns him iconic status, uniting England and France and briefly banishing the civil strife that will long outlive him. This Shakespearean epic expertly balances the thrilling heroics of battle with the painful and complex reactions of men who are sometimes unsure of the justice of their cause. KING HENRY V is a rousing, fascinating story about the power of courage and the price of glory.
KING HENRY V is directed by Davis McCallum, whose previous productions with The Acting Company include Jane Eyre, The Tempest and The Turn of the Screw. His New York credits include Chuck Mee’s Queens Boulevard (Signature Theatre) and Quiara Hudes’ Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue (P73 at the Culture Project, 2007 Pulitzer Finalist). He has also directed for The Old Globe, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Cleveland Play House and PlayMakers Repertory Company, among others. He’s a 2007 Jack O’Brien Directing Fellow (The Old Globe), 2003 Killian Directing Fellow (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), 2001 Drama League Directing Fellow and is currently in the NEA/TCG Career Development Program.
Leading the cast as King Henry V is Matthew Amendt, who has performed with Guthrie Theater in Three Sisters, Death of a Salesman (international tour), As You Like It, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice and Peer Gynt, among others. Freddy Arsenault (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed as a member of Blue Man Group, as well as with American Shakespeare Center, Hangar Theatre, Bard SummerScape Festival. Georgia Cohen (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed at Guthrie Theater (A Guthrie Experience), Trinity Repertory Company, Long Wharf Theatre and The Gamm Theatre. Kelley Curran (Chorus/Ensemble) is performing in her third season with The Acting Company, both Off-Broadway and on tour, where she’s appeared in Moby Dick Rehearsed, The Tempest and Jane Eyre. In New York, she has also appeared at The Public Theater and 59E59. Rick Ford (Chorus/Ensemble) has appeared at Utah Shakespearean Festival, Long Wharf Theatre and Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, among others. On television, he has been seen in Married with Children and Mama’s Family. Andy Grotelueschen (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed in New York in The Scariest, The Amazing Ted Show!, Clowns, Don Cristobal, and Twelfth Night. His regional credits include Moliere Impromptu, Moon for the Misbegotten, Richard III and Much Ado about Nothing. Carie Kawa (Chorus/Ensemble) appeared Off-Broadway and toured as Bertha in The Acting Company’s Jane Eyre. Her regional credits include Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Center Repertory Theatre, Olivia in Twelfth Night at Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Elmire in Tartuffe at Great Lakes Theater Festival. Robert Michael McClure (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed at The Kennedy Center, The Studio Theater, Everyman Theater, Arena Stage, New Dramatists and CENTERSTAGE. His film appearances include The Brave One, The Burg, All’s Faire, Pickup & Return and numerous commercials. William Sturdivant (Chorus/Ensemble) is a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He is Associate Artistic Director of New American Theatre Project, and most recently performed as Lysander in Guthrie Theater's production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Samuel Taylor (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed in Flags at Guthrie Theater, As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare on the Cape, Macbeth at Greasy Joan & Company, and Macbeth, Belladonna and The Wolfman at Tricklock Company. Chris Thorn (Chorus/Ensemble) has appeared in New York with The Production Company, Ma-Yi Theater Company, Ensemble Studio Theater, Synapse Productions and Inverse Theater, among others. His regional credits include work at Huntington Theatre Company, Gloucester Stage Company and The Lyric Stage Company of Boston. Sonny Valicenti (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, the NOW Festival at REDCAT in Los Angeles and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. He recently appeared on TNT’s Raising the Bar.
The creative team for KING HENRY V includes Neil Patel (Set Design), who designed The Clean House for ATC last season. His work with The Acting Company includes Moby Dick Rehearsed, The Tempest, Jane Eyre, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. On Broadway, he designed Sideman, ‘night Mother and Ring of Fire. Off-Broadway, he has designed for Cherry Lane, Theatre for a New Audience, MCC Theater, Zipper, Roundabout Theatre Company, Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, New York Theatre Workshop and The Public Theater. Anita Yavich (Costume Design) designed Anna In The Tropics on Broadway. Off-Broadway, she has designed many shows, including Iphigenia 2.0, Measure for Pleasure, Kit Marlowe, Winter’s Tail, Pericles and Coriolanus. Her work with The Metropolitan Opera includes Les Troyens and Cyrano (also at Teatro alla Scala and Royal Opera House). Michael Chybowski (Lighting Design) previously designed Three Tall Women at ATC. He has worked with The Acting Company on Moby Dick Rehearsed, The Tempest, Jane Eyre, Macbeth, Two Gentlemen of Verona and Richard III, among many others. In New York, he has also designed productions of Hair, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Wit, Beckett/Albee, Beard of Avon. An Obie Award recipient for Sustained Excellence, Mr. Chybowski heads Brandeis University’s Theater Lighting Program. Victor Zupanc (Music Composition) has won numerous awards and honors for over 250 works at La Jolla Playhouse, Guthrie Theater, Playwrights Horizon, San Diego Repertory Theatre, The New Victory Theater, Missouri Repertory Theatre and in China, Japan, Europe, South America, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Scott Edwards (Sound Design) who designed ATC’S 1995 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the Guthrie Theater’s Sound Designer, where he has designed 65 productions in addition to his extensive work at several Minneapolis/St. Paul theatres and Minnesota Opera. He is the Production Manager/Sound Engineer for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. Sara Phillips is the Voice and Text Consultant; Andrew Wade is the Vocal Coach. The Fight Director is John Sipes and the Production Stage Manager is Karen Parlato.
