"There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That's me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That's a great deal harder, and that's Equality Now. It's not about politics; it's about basic human decency."   Joss Whedon

Firefly fans know that no one can ever stop the signal. The "signal," of course, refers to fans of what is highly regarded as one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows ever aired; Firefly. Every year, people around the globe come together not only to celebrate one of their favorite shows and films, they gather to raise money for a good cause. Since 2006, the annual Can't Stop the Serenity event has been held in theaters throughout the world to raise funds and awareness for Equality Now. Since it's inception, the event has raised over $900,000!

Fox has hosted the screening for the past several years and Tucson fans have flocked to the theatre to be a part of this important special event. This year's event promises to be as epic as always with the screening of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog before the showing os Whedon's fabulous film Serenity.

In case anyone needs a gentle reminder, Firefly was basically a cowboy western set in outer space that included brilliant writing and a phenomenal cast that propelled the careers of actors such as Castle's Nathan Fillion, Mad Men's redheaded bombshell Christina Hendricks,Suburgatory's Alan Tudyk and Homeland's Morena Baccarin. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The film, Serenity, is based on the series and was created by Whedon in response to the outpour of support for the show to continue and the fan frenzy that led expanded to other media from comic books to role-playing games.

Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Working with national human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support their efforts to stop these human rights abuses.
