The Community Players AUDITIONS for Second Annual New One Act Play Festival

From: S B [mailto:srs1113@live.com]
Sent: Monday, May 29, 2017 10:31 PM
Subject: Please Post - Audition Notice

Audition Announcement

The Community Players, Tucson's premier community theatre company is holding open auditions for its final show of the season. It is a very special show, our Second Annual New One Act Play Festival, which highlights three playwrights from Arizona. The writers submitted a new, unpublished, unproduced one act play which was then scored by a panel of judges and the top three are awarded the first prize of having their play staged as a full production. The winning playwrights this year are Vince Flynn for his play "Dealing With It", Carl Damhesel for his play "A Good Cradle Doesn't Wobble", and Richard Thompson for his play "Last Call".

Auditions are being held this Wednesday and Thursday May 31 and June 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at The Community Playhouse, 1881 N. Oracle Road. You should come prepared to do cold readings from the script. Sides will be provided upon arrival. It is possible that you will be asked to read by more than one director.

Character breakdowns for each play are as follows:

Dealing With It 1 female 30-40 strong lead with wide emotional range

1 female 20-30 fresh out of college, not too bright

A Good Cradle Doesn't Wobble 2 females 20-30, one well dressed, severe business like, the other is more comfortable, casual mix and match look

1 male 20-30, relaxed and easy going

Last Call 1 male 30-40, slick, fashionable, confident, all business, cold and uncaring

1 male 50-60, heavy set and balding, used car salesman look

The Second Annual New One Act Play Festival will run July 14-30 with shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2:00. Rehearsals will start immediately with the director for each to determine what nights and times work best for each cast. Each play will be rehearsed separately until tech week and then will be rehearsed as they will be presented. This is a great opportunity for our very talented writers to have their work produced and finally see their hard work rewarded. It is also a great opportunity for actors to be a part of the world premiere of these plays and to get to know a group of individuals who create the need to have actors. Let's support all areas of the arts and help make the world premiere of these three plays everything these playwrights could have imagined.

"The Invisible Art of Editing"

Tuesday, June 6th at 7 PM

Art Institute of Tucson
5099 E Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ 85719

This interactive workshop is an overview of the principles and aesthetics of editing.

Taking a quick look at the history, this class explores the Hidden Art of Editing.  Editing impacts the rhythm, tone, pace and style of your film or video. Great editing can make a film great – and weak editing can undermine the best projects.  Come try your hand at "paper editing" a simple sequence and see how just changing the order (or length) of one shot can change the meaning and message of a scene.

Presenter:

Genie Joseph, PhD – Producer/Director – Former ABC staff Producer/Director, winner of International film awards and host of her own TV and Radio talk show in Honolulu.

Considered a turning point in musical theatre history, Oklahoma! opened in 1943, ushering in the "golden age" of Broadway. Rodgers and Hammerstein musical catapulted the songwriting duo to success, running for 2,212 performances and garnering a special 1944 Pulitzer Prize. The iconic musical centers on cowboy Curly McLain and his budding romance with town beauty, Laurey Williams, in the 1906 Oklahoma territory. However, trouble brews when preparations for the night's box social dance spark jealousy and confusion among the townsfolk.

Actors: Please prepare a 60 second vocal selection from a musical theatre production

Theatre Technicians: Students will learn technical theatre skills throughout all phases of the production.  Students interested in Stage Management, Run Crew, Musical Direction, Choreography, Costuming, Lighting and Sound are asked to interview for a role on the technical crew.

Interested in both Acting and Tech?  Positions are available for students that want to be in the cast while learning about theatre tech.  Please sign-up for both an audition and interview.

In order to "set the stage" all actors and tech students will learn about the society and culture that shaped turn of the century America.  In addition, students learn about the filming of the movie Oklahoma in Southern Arizona.

Improvathon Workshops

Our goal to bring excellent out of town comedy instructors to Tucson is highlighted this weekend with Michael Dean of Los Angeles and Jose Gonzalez of The Torch Theater in Phoenix.  Workshops will run from 10AM-12noon on Saturday, May 27th.  Register Here

Listening Ultra
Instructor: Jose Gonzalez
Listening is the most important & fundamental skill in improv whether you're entirely new to the art form or an experienced comedy veteran. It isn't just hearing the words being spoken; it's hearing the subtext of the character you're interacting with and understanding the intent of your fellow performer. Listening isn't just hearing; it's being aware of the tone & energy of the what exists so far and tapping into that. Listening isn't just being aware of everything around you; it's also understanding your own impulses & choices and listening to yourself. That's what Listening Ultra is all about.
