MASTERS OF WAR explores Vietnam War draft lottery

By John Vornholt

Directed by Maryann Green

Six young men about to graduate from college watch their fate determined by a bingo hopper on television the night of the draft for the Vietnam War. Based on playwright John Vornholt's personal experience—and told with honesty and without saccharine nostalgia—this play captures the myriad feelings every young man in America felt that night.

"I was in a room full of these poor lottery guys in college on December 1, 1969. I had not yet turned 19 and was not in this lottery. That crazy TV show was so dramatic that I started writing the play that night. I have worked on it about every 10 years since then, especially when we workshopped a longer version of the play nine years ago at Beowulf Alley. It now has the 18-year-old writer, and the 30-, 40-, and 50-year-old writer, so I view this play as both historical and contemporary," said Vornholt.

"I've always been fascinated by the draft lottery and this is a very personal intimate connection to the event. We've experimented a lot this Etcetera season, but 'Masters of War' is a well-written, traditional theatre piece with fully developed characters," said 'Masters of War' director and Etcetera Late-Night Series producer Maryann Green.

The cast includes: Julian Cardenas, Sean Cronin, Tyler Gastelum, David Gunther, Quinn McBrayer and Joe Ross.
