Reports to: Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) Board of Directors
The Tucson Pima Arts Council is a 22-year-old 501(c)3 whose mission is to enrich the quality of individual and community life in Tucson and Pima County through advocacy and development of the arts. A substantial portion of Arts Council funding is derived from city and county government.
The Tucson/Pima County arts and cultural environment is rich with history and is poised for further development as a major regional arts center. The Arts Council's role is to nurture and promote the arts in this rapidly growing region. This position is based in Tucson, a city approaching one million in population and known for its high quality of life and low cost of living.
A major current project of the Arts Council is to create a comprehensive cultural development plan for the region. The plan, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, will be developed over the next nine months and implemented expeditiously thereafter.
Position and Responsibilities: The executive director, as the chief executive officer and voice of the organization, reports to the board of directors and is responsible for administering the policies set by the board, maximizing and effectively using the resources of the organization to implement its mission, and developing and maintaining an effective organization with respect to structure, daily operations, personnel, and internal/external communication.
The Executive Director must:
Possess an entrepreneurial track record of developing initiatives and obtaining resources for their implementation, raising private funds, and attracting foundation grants as part of a comprehensive fund-raising program, working closely with the TPAC board and staff.
Act as chief spokesperson and public figure with demonstrated skill in working with a broad range of arts and other community organizations, professional and amateur artists, business and education leaders, government, the media, and local, state, and national arts funding sources.
Formulate and implement long-range plans, policies, procedures, and programs, in collaboration with the board and staff. Demonstrate strength and experience in managing complex, interlocking planning, administration, budget, and implementation projects.
Prepare and monitor annual operating budgets, ensuring efficiency and financial controls.
Improve the planning, implementation, and results of the organization's arts and cultural programs.
Demonstrate leadership ability and attract, train, motivate, and manage a highly effective staff. Stimulate creativity, provide vision, encourage staff input, and generate new ideas.
Additional qualifications:
Commitment to and varied interest in and knowledge of the arts.
Experience in innovative arts, cultural, and commercial development.
Experience in the management of a client- and constituent-driven organization and in the development of an effective membership program.
Skill at achieving community consensus by engaging diverse groups, community leaders, and multiple constituents. Superior networking skills.
Outstanding interpersonal skills with a talent for using public relations, marketing, and research to build partnerships and collaborative initiatives.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local governmental practices and finances, intergovernmental relations, and grants management.
Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office and an understanding of database and accounting management. Technically innovative.
Minimum of a bachelor's degree with ten years of progressively senior experience in arts agency or business management. A master's degree and five years of senior management experience preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
Knowledge of Southwestern heritage and an appreciation for Hispanic culture and art history.
Bilingual skills preferred in speaking and writing both English and Spanish.
