A CULTURALLY RICH “FEAST” OF STORIES FOR THE MAGIC BOX

Support from Councilmember Trasoff & Ward 6 brings

Stories That Soar! to JB Wright Elementary

Stories that Soar! (STS!) will celebrate the stories of the culturally rich community of JB Wright Elementary School. The mission of STS! is to empower children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas. Regardless of their age, ethnicity, ability or academic level, all children are invited to participate and all children share the benefits as their unique perspective and collective voice are honored.

As stated by librarian Janine Strand, “Currently in our third year, the teachers at Wright have a strong buy-in to the project.  The students in our school speak 23 languages and come from points all over the globe.  Many of our children and families struggle mightily to survive from one week to the next.  But their hearts are strong, their spirits are deep, their minds are sharp, and they have so very much to say.  Participation in the Stories That Soar! project gives our students the opportunity to develop their voices; and to understand that others will not only listen to them, but that their words and ideas will be appreciated, respected, and celebrated.

The enthusiasm is electric around campus during the weeks between the Magic Box kickoff assembly and the Big Show.  With an eagerness that stops just short of mania, the students tackle their story writing.  However, inspiring a keen interest in writing a winning story is only part of the brilliance and influence of the Stories That Soar! phenomenon. Come show time, the validation and esteem that the students experience – as writers, as kids of value – is more powerful than anything I have seen in my 20+ years in education.  The performed pieces generate great collective pride.  ‘Look at US!  Look what WE did!’  For a school filled with children and families who often feel that the worlds of ‘achievement’ and ‘success’ are out of reach, this is a gift beyond imagining.”

To witness the magic of a live Stories that Soar! production, please join us Friday, March 27th at 12:45 p.m. at JB Wright Elementary School, located at 4311 E. Linden.

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to come see this show as long as they check in at the office.  For more information, please visit www.storiesthatsoar.org.
