Tucson, Arizona--PCC Theatre Arts presents a unique and relevant interpretation of Arthur Miller’s powerful drama “The Crucible” directed by Dr. Frank Pickard. The play runs April 8-19 in the Center for the Arts Black Box Theatre. There is no performance on Easter Sunday.

Miller, one of America’s highly acclaimed modern playwrights, wrote “The Crucible” in 1953 as an allegory to McCarthyism and the witch-hunt for communists in the government, following the end of World War II. The Red Scare caused hysteria to run amok in the country, as fear of the Soviet Union emerging as a major power grew. People were called before Congress to testify about their loyalty to the US government and to report on their friends, neighbors and family. In Miller’s play the script is based on events taking place during the Salem witch trials of 1692, where religious fanaticism seized Puritan Massachusetts resulting in mass hysteria and wild accusations of witchcraft, whereupon nineteen people were convicted and hung.

Director Pickard is taking an uncommon approach to staging this American classic. He states, “The production will integrate elements that emphasize the major themes and issues of the play to make them more relevant to today’s audience.” Fanaticism, abuse of religion and power, intolerance, infidelity and integrity play a major role in “The Crucible,” as well as in present day, where the attitudes of extremists attack those in society who don’t agree with their interpretation of right and wrong; and where the lines between government and religion sometimes cross
. To achieve this relevance, Pickard has staged this production unlike any “Crucible” you might have seen before. The combination of Miller’s compelling script and the director’s creative interpretation of casting, costuming, lighting, sets and music produces an assault on the senses that will drive the audience to emotional highs and lows.

The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or e-mail  centerforthearts@pima.edu.
